Productivity
In my reading this morning, I came across the very best definition of productivity that I have ever heard.
I felt I should share it with you.
In Ch. 7 of No BS Time Management for Entrepreneurs, technique # 5 (which is to fight to link everything to your goals) Dan Kennedy defines productivity.
“Productivity is the deliberate, strategic investment of your time, talent, intelligence, energy, resources, and opportunities in a manner calculated to move you measurably closer to meaningful goals.”
I love this definition!
It invokes KMMA foundational Superpower #1, Focus, because it is a deliberate, strategic investment of time and resources, as opposed to passing, killing, wasting or letting others control our time.
Remember that in another recent blog, we spoke of time as our most valuable resource.
I believe it also applies superpower #2, Respect, and specifically self respect because this definition calls us to recognize and deploy our talent, energy and resources towards the accomplishment of our goals.
Superpower #3 is Discipline, and I hope it’s obvious how that one applies to the execution of the author’s productivity definition.
By the way, Dan shares a simple question to ask yourself whenever you’re not sure if you’re being productive:
“Is what I am doing, this minute, moving me measurably closer to my goals?”
Superpower #4 is Confidence and I would argue that the mere attempt to live life this way, under your own control, creates more Confidence. On the flip side of the same coin, it will take some Confidence when you need to say “no” to invitations that don’t move you closer to your goals.
Superpower #5 is Gratitude, and I love that Dan’s definition of productivity includes resources and opportunities.
We have more of these in our country than any other at any previous time in history.
We need to exercise our attitude of gratitude to be cognizant of that and invest them in a manner calculated to move us closer to our goals.
Superpower #6 is Vision.
The whole thing has to begin with goals.
When we have a vivid Vision of who we want to be and where we want to go, we can then set about the rest of the mechanism outlined in the productivity definition to move measurably closer to these meaningful goals.
I love the “measurably” closer too, by the way.
That which gets measured gets done.
That which doesn’t doesn’t.
