It’s Running Right

I took my truck to get worked on recently.

It hadn’t been running right, so I took it in for an oil change, tune-up and diagnostic.

The competent mechanics at Veteran’s Ford figured out what was going on and got it taken care of.

So, this morning, I was having my regular coffee time with Barbara and she asked me how it was running.

     I said, “great, I think.”

She though it was funny that I said “I think”….

and that led to today’s meditation.

I realized that I said that because it wasn’t anything particularly great that made it great.

It was just the absence of anything wrong.

When the truck was missing, skipping and even sometimes almost stalling, I knew exactly how it was.

But now that it was running right, there was nothing particularly note-worthy…

Isn’t that interesting?

And how often do we do the same in life?

I guess it’s similar to what I was saying in last week’s blog about not taking all of our many blessings for granted.

Some times we have a harder time explaining what is right than when something is wrong.

When things are just going along without incident, we can miss the fact that our life is “running right”.

Don’t get me wrong, setting and getting goals and other small victories along the way are fun and exciting in a different way too.

But sometimes we just need to be grateful for all the people, places and things that just do what they’re supposed to do.

So I’m gonna answer my wife’s question again, publicly, here:

“My truck is running awesome! It starts every time I ask it to, and gets me where I want to go. She accelerates when I push the pedal- she is a 5.0 you know. 🙂 and she’s not shaking, sputtering or stopping any more. She’s a great truck and she runs great too.

I love my truck! And I love you too.”
