Who Are You?

A series of weekend events led me to this meditation, and I hope that I can share it succinctly and effectively, and that it will be useful to you.

      Who are you?

It’s such a loaded question, isn’t it.

You can answer this question in relation to your roles or goals.

Some identify largely based on events of their past; and others with aspirations about their future.

Upon reflection, we can see that all of these responses are valid and true.

Our past, present and future Vision largely identify who I am and who are you.

While I largely believe that our past is most useful only for its lessons, and a measure of how far we have come…

I also realize that our past- where we were born and how we were raised, our environment, events and circumstances, hardships, trials and mistakes- largely influence who we are in this moment, in every moment, and how we think, act and react within it.

My passion on the prior postulate, that the purpose of the past is to learn and move on, comes from my passion about action versus reaction and focusing my focus on that which I can control and away from that (i.e. the past) that I can not.

But it does not mean to diminish those struggling with issues connected to theirs.

These things are real, and have to be deal with. Fortunately there are professionals trained to help people do this.

I am better at helping people identify and act upon what’s important next.

Which somewhat brings me back to my point and meditation.

“Who are you?” is a question based on our roles for sure; for example, I am a husband, father, grandfather, Christian, teacher, leader, author, entrepreneur and, clearly, a philosopher…

But it’s also a question we answer based on where we’ve come from and where we want to go.

At Krav Maga Martial Arts, “we are a Blackbelt School”.

It’s on our wall, and something we communicate early and often to students.

It’s how we cast the Vision, for every student, that they can be a Blackbelt one day!

Not just that they can, but that they will be!

I teach Vision, the 6th Foundational Blackbelt Superpower, so passionately because it changed my life. And continues to do so!

I was a confident and competent leader, teacher and entrepreneur long before I became one.

And the same is true with whatever relative success I have had as a father, husband, friend, author…

in every area of life that I have known a little success, I saw it first and then went to work on making it reality.

I’m sorry where I am preaching to the choir, for I know there are many in my audience far more successful than I that know that what I am sharing is true!

But it’s a great reminder for me, my students, and maybe for you?

So I ask again, post meditation remembering that we get to create our identity by our thoughts, beliefs, Vision and action and, most of all, who we choose to be.

Who are you?
