What Do You Want?

“You do not rise to the level of your goals. You fall to the level of your systems.”

James Clear

Atomic Habits

I have been thinking on this a lot lately…

and not just reference business systems, though we do work tirelessly to make our customer service, recruiting, retention, classroom, and other systems better and better.

But in every area of life that we want to be better, we need to choose or create, and then consistently follow, a system.

My wife and I have fitness and financial management systems we subscribe to, for example, to try and accomplish our goals in each of those areas.

And this morning over coffee, we were talking about wherein we are doing a good job and wherein we need to focus more.

One of the revelations that came up in the discussion is that we need to make sure our systems move us towards what we want, instead of what we don’t want.

That is, we need to be careful to do, demand and reward the habits and behaviors that bring us more of the goals that we say we want…

and do less, and correct, the habits and behaviors that create what we don’t.

So, we need to decide:

  1. what we really want,
  2. what systems, behaviors and habits will create that,
  3. what we expect, what to reward and what to correct,
  4. and how to measure periodically to make sure our system’s working.

Confession time before my closing questions:

When I write for you, I’m also writing for me.

Reading, writing, and discussing helps me think through things.

Now some action questions for you:

  1. What do you really want? Have you ever noticed how some people say they want something but behave differently? Have you ever been guilty yourself? yes and yes for me!
  2. What is a system that can help you?
  3. What behaviors and habits support the system and the goal?
  4. And, if you don’t wanna do it alone, who is a coach that can help and hold you accountable?

Curious if KMMA can help?

Reply to this email with your questions.

I’d love to help you decide if we’re a good fit for what you want.
