What direction are you headed?

I sometimes find myself remourseful over my sins of the past, or regretful about my past mistakes.

But both of these sentiments are counterproductive; once we have repented from our sins and learned from our mistakes,

we need to move forward.

There is a reason that our windshield is so big and our rear view mirror so small.

Can you imagine if it were the other way?

If your rear view was bigger than your windshield it would be impossible to move- forward anyway.

You could only go back.

Our life is like that too. It is imperative that we learn from our past, but that we live and work in the present to create the future.

That’s how winning is done, and that’s when we are happiest.

And it’s not just the past that can distract us from where we want to go. So can the present.

We can allow circumstances to steal our joy and stifle our future.

Just look at individual and corporate responses to the Corona pandemic.

  • Some are allowing it to be an excuse to keep them where they are at- or worse.
  • Others have managed to find ways to adapt and overcome and get on with their lives.
  • And still others have used this challenge as a reason to not only survive but thrive, finding new ways to do what they do or reinventing themselves completely.

What direction are you going? Do you have meaningful goals that you’re chasing? Are you growing? Are we teaching our children to do the same?

These are important questions.

We are in complete control of who we choose to be and how we choose to react, to both our past and to our present circumstances.

Here are a few important action steps to help you do so:

  1. Know who you want to be, how you want to be and what direction you want to go in your life.
  2. Be careful of your self talk. Leave your past in your past and when the voice in your head that reminds you of previous failures starts talking, tell him to shut up and sit back down. You got work to do.
  3. Be careful how you react to other people.
    • Remember that noone can “make you” do or feel anything. We can’t control another’s behavior, but we can always control the way we react.
  4. PARI regularly to make sure you’re still going in the right direction.
    • PARI= Plan, Act, Review, Improve

I will freely admit that nothing I have shared in this blog is easy. Like so many things, this process is simple but not easy.

I write to remind myself what to do as well as to share with you.

I hope it’s helpful, and now we all get a choice about what we will do.
