When the Plan Doesn’t Go as Planned

An experienced martial arts instructor places a guiding hand on a student’s shoulder while providing instruction in a dojo.

Sometimes you can have a clear goal, put in the work, and still not get the result you expected.

You don’t pass the test.
The technique doesn’t work the way you thought it would.
The plan falls apart.
You make a mistake.
You don’t get the outcome you wanted.

That’s frustrating.

But a setback doesn’t automatically mean you need a new goal.

Sometimes, you just need a new approach.

Think about martial arts.

If one technique isn’t working, you don’t decide you’re never going to learn it.

You look at what happened.

You make an adjustment.

You try again.

That’s an important difference:

Changing your approach is not the same as giving up on your goal.

Sometimes we get so attached to how we thought something was supposed to happen that when the plan changes, we assume we’ve failed.

But the path to a goal isn’t always a straight line.

There may be adjustments.

There may be mistakes.

There may be moments when you have to stop, rethink your approach, and try something different.

That’s not failure.

     That’s learning.

So when something doesn’t go according to plan, ask yourself:

     What can this teach me?

     What can I do differently?

     What still matters most?

Then make the adjustment and keep moving toward the goal.

The goal can stay the same even when the plan changes.

Don’t let one setback convince you to abandon something you’re still capable of achieving.
