Respect Yourself

Today I want to talk about one of the most important Blackbelt Superpowers- Respect.

We teach a lot about respecting others in my Blackbelt Leadership program.

Children learn about respect for authority and learn the & Words of Respect.

But we also develop the most important respect of all, self-respect.

Self-respect allows us to feel better, perform better and just be better…

for ourselves and for those around us.

The definition of self-respect is pride and confidence in oneself; a feeling that one is behaving with honor and dignity.

Let’s break the definition down:

  • pride means a feeling of deep pleasure or satisfaction derived from one’s own achievements, the achievements of those with whom one is closely associated, or from qualities or possessions that are widely admired.
  • confidence means the feeling or belief that one can rely on someone or something: firm trust.
  • honor means 1. high respect; great esteem and/or 2. adherence to what is right or to a conventional standard of conduct.
  • dignity means the state or quality of being worthy of honor or respect.

It was worth breaking down these definitions for 2 reasons:

  1. if self-respect is the sum of these things, we should first understand what each means.
  2. they are not often used anymore and, when they are, not in this way.

Some of the words are thrown around loosely, or even appropriated for agendas; but few are used in their classical sense or even in accordance with their actual definition.

Number next, they are interdependent. You may have noticed that the last definition even points back at the first.

These ideals are also lofty.

For that reason, many today choose not to even aspire towards them.

But I believe that the character attributes that these ideals espouse are exactly what we want for ourselves and our kids.

And, let me tell you, these are the things that my Blackbelt Leadership Program produces.

My Blackbelts are the products of the product.

They have self-respect- and all the worthy character ideals that come with it.
