Learning Through Play

This morning my wife, Barbara, was playing with our grandson Triton.

I so appreciate how kindly and patiently she plays with him; he’s not asking for his tablet when she is.

This is a lesson in and of itself, but one for another day.

I also appreciate Triton’s great imagination.

For this morning’s play he created his own little store, wherein Barbara was coming and buying items from him, and he was joyfully calculating his earnings….

of course, as he was selling my possessions, he had no cost of goods sold, so he was pretty profitable. 😉

At one point Barb went out to walk the dogs.

When she came back in, she went to the restroom herself.

When she did, Triton said “she came in and went to the bathroom, so I guess nobody wants to play.”

This was my invitation to play, which I was grateful to accept.

“Well Triton, I said, in order to get people to come to your shop, you’re going to have to do some marketing.”

We spent a few minutes discussing all the ways he could announce the opening of his new store.

He came up with texting himself and the rest of the morning play between grandma and he included a lot of that.

In this morning’s play time, Triton was not only exercising his imagination which, in and of itself is incredibly valuable; but he was also learning about accounting, marketing, sales and entrepreneurship.

A very basic introduction to each to be sure, but he was learning through play, nonetheless.

And that brings me to the point of today’s meditation.

Play is important. Learning is important.

And learning through play is one of the best ways to accomplish these two important tasks.

We do this often at Krav Maga Martial Arts- using games and healthy competition to bring out the best in students and disguise the many thousands of repetitions that it takes to be great.

In what ways can you gamify your own learning, or that of those you teach?

And if you’d like to come play and learn with us, we’d love to have you!
