Emotions and Logic
So I’m reading a great book by Patrick Bet-David, Choose Your Enemies Wisely- Business Planning for the Audacious Few.
If you happen to be en entrepreneur or business leader, I highly recommend it for you.
But he said something in it that I thought would be useful for all my my Krav Maga Martial Arts audience.
He talked about the importance of having emotion and logic.
He told a story about two team members that he had giving him their annual business plans.
The one (Ernie) was full of passion, purpose and emotion, but when the author asked him how he was going to accomplish the powerful goals he had, his plan was incomplete.
The other gent (Larry) had an amazing slide presentation, and charts and graphs. His plan and presentation was powerful.
But when Patrick asked him why he wanted to succeed at his plan, he was unable to give a compelling answer.
You may already know somewhat where I am going with this, but it was what the author asked next where I had the greatest aha experience…
he asked:
“Based on what you know about these two guys, who would you bet on to succeed in achieving their goals, whether they are losing weight, starting a business, or moving up the ranks in their company?”
Instead of telling you what I answered, allow me to ask you the same thing.
Who do you think?
But it’s what he said next that was the aha:
“Your answer to these questions will tell me a lot about you. If you’re more in your head, you’ll bet on Larry. If you’re more in your heart, you’ll bet on Ernie.”
Then he said, “What I’ve learned over two decades of experience is neither Larry nor Ernie is a smart bet to accomplish his goals. The logical people are right to believe that Ernie won’t be able to stay organized long enough to get the job done, and the emotional people are right to wonder what’s going to keep Larry motivated.”
Based on my 24 years building this business, I agree.
And, in transparency, I’m the passionate and emotional guy.
Early on, I hadn’t figured out the logical part- the planning, statistics, and other business elements of a business that make it tick, and grow.
Luckily, my hunger was great enough that I’ve kept learning and growing and am better on that side today and also surrounded by some better at it than I as well.
And, as “luckily”, I have always been passionate enough about my calling to keep fighting on no matter what.
Since I threw the term “fighting” out there, let me address this principle as pertains to a self defense situation too.
This requires both things as well.
The “logic” side are the techniques, principles, curriculum and training methods of our self protection system…
but the emotional side connotes the heart and spirit of a warrior- also developed through what we do.
Both are essential in self defense, business, and life.
And developing both in future Blackbelt Leaders is what we do.
