Your New Rank Is Only the Beginning

In a gymnasium with wooden floors and blue mats, two young martial artists wearing blue t-shirts, white pants, and black belts stand facing Grandmaster Del Castillo, who is seated. The Grandmaster, who is wearing a distinctive American flag patterned martial arts top, gestures animatedly while talking to the children. Several other instructors and students in blue uniforms sit at tables and chairs along the right side of the frame, watching the interaction.

This week, we’ve been asking one simple question:

What’s next?

You earned a new rank.
You celebrated the accomplishment.
You thought about your next goal.
You considered the steps it will take to get there.

And you thought about the person you’re becoming along the way.

Now there’s one more thing to remember:

You don’t have to have the entire journey figured out.

You just need to know your next step.

Sometimes the path ahead will be clear.

Sometimes it won’t.

You’ll have great training days.
You’ll have frustrating ones.
You’ll make progress.
You’ll have setbacks.
You’ll surprise yourself.

And sometimes you’ll have to go back, make an adjustment, and try again.

That’s part of the journey.

The goal isn’t to be perfect.

The goal is to keep learning, keep growing, and keep moving forward.

That’s what constant and never-ending improvement is all about.

So as you head into the weekend, take a few minutes and think about three things:

What have I accomplished?

What’s my next goal?

What’s one thing I can do next week to move toward it?

You don’t need to know everything that’s ahead.

Just know what’s next.

Then take the next step.

Because the next level is where the next journey begins.
