Finding Your Why
The leadership lesson we have been teaching from the floor this week is about finding your why. The Sensei have been telling the following story:
If I put a 10-inch-wide, 30-foot-long plank on the ground and say, “If you walk the length of the plank, I’ll give you $20,” would you do it? Of course, it’s an easy twenty bucks.
But what if I took that same plank and made a rooftop “bridge” between two tall buildings? For the same $20, would you walk across that sky-high plank? Probably not.
However, what if your child was on the opposite building, and that building was on fire and the flames were licking at her neck. If you didn’t go across she would certainly perish. Would you walk across that plank to save her? Likely, your answer would be, “Absolutely and immediately!”
Why is it that the first time I asked you to cross that sky-high plank, you said no way, yet, the second time you wouldn’t hesitate? The risks and the dangers are the same. What changed? Your “why” changed—your reason for wanting to do it. You see, when the reason is big enough, you will be willing to perform almost anything.
So step one towards accomplishing your biggest and most important goals for 2022 is to decide why they are important to you.
I challenge you to choose at least three specific goals for the year if you haven’t already.
If we aim at nothing, we’ll hit it every time.
Then, break it down to 3 goals for this quarter to kick-start your year right.
Then, and perhaps most important to actually achieving your goals, decide why you want them.
The why will be the fuel to the fire that keeps you going, so make it a good one.
And, in closing, if you can’t think of a strong enough why to attach to your goal, perhaps it’s not the right goal; pick a better one.
One of the really cool things about our academy is that all of our classes are family classes. So, while there are multiple instructors on the floor and the classes are broken down by age so that everyone gets exactly what they need, your whole family can train together!
Come have fun, get a great workout and learn something new- together as a family!
How many of your childrens’ programs do you get to train with them in?
