Why ‘just put the phone down’ rarely works
KMMA Families,
Quick honest question…
Who is doing more of the daily training in your child’s life right now…
You?
School?
Us?
Or their phone?
Because make no mistake—screens are training our children.
Training their attention span.
Training their emotional regulation.
Training their patience.
Training their expectations for instant gratification.
Training them to crave novelty.
Training them to avoid discomfort.
And here’s the scary part…
It works.
Because repetition wires behavior.
As a martial arts instructor for 40+ years, I can tell you this:
What gets practiced gets strengthened.
That’s true whether we’re building focus and discipline…
Or distraction and impulsiveness.
This isn’t anti-technology.
Technology is a tool.
But tools should serve us—not master us.
At KMMA, we intentionally train the opposite habits:
Focus over fragmentation.
Discipline over distraction.
Confidence over dependency.
Respect over entitlement.
Real challenge over digital dopamine.
Because leadership starts with self-leadership.
And self-leadership starts with attention.
This week, ask yourself:
“Who—or what—is training my child most?”
Prepare to Live. Empower to Lead.
