What Dog Training Taught Me About Leadership

This morning over coffee, Barb shared something she had heard from Cesar Millan — the Dog Whisperer.

He teaches that good dogs don’t start their day with food, affection, or play.

They start with discipline.

A calm, structured walk with their master.
Clear leadership.
Clear expectations.

Only after that… do they earn food, affection, and downtime.

As she was talking, I laughed and said,
“That’s exactly how I live my life.”

I don’t eat until my work is done.
No rewards before responsibility.
No comfort before commitment.

And the truth is — this isn’t about dogs at all.

     It’s about leadership.

  • Dogs crave leadership.
  • Kids crave leadership.
  • Families crave leadership.

And when leadership is missing, chaos fills the gap.

What looks like “behavior problems” is usually just:

  • A lack of structure

  • A lack of discipline

  • A lack of clear direction

That’s true for dogs.
  It’s true for kids.
    It’s true for adults.

Discipline isn’t punishment.

     Discipline is love with a backbone.

It’s teaching the order of life:

  • Lead first.
  • Work first.
  • Earn the reward.

When you flip that order — when rewards come before responsibility — things fall apart.
