This isn’t Just Kid Stuff

I’ve shared this story before, but I think the lesson behind it is still valuable enough to tell again.

 

One morning, after our usual coffee time together, my wife asked me to take the towels upstairs with me.

 

As I picked them up, she simply said, “Thank you.”

 

And I replied, “You’re welcome.”

 

That’s it.

 

Not exactly a remarkable story, I know.

But it got me thinking.

 

After all these years together, and after spending so much time together, it would be easy to become so familiar with one another that simple courtesies become automatic-or disappear altogether.

 

But we still say please and thank you.

We still show consideration for one another.

We still treat each other with courtesy and respect.

 

And I think that matters.

 

Because character isn’t just something we teach kids.

 

At Krav Maga Martial Arts, we spend a great deal of time developing the qualities that help our students become confident, capable Blackbelt Leaders – the Focus, Respect, Discipline, Confidence, Gratitude and Vision that form our Blackbelt Foundational Superpowers.

 

But here’s the thing:

These aren’t just “kid skills.”

 

They’re life skills.

 

And if we’re being honest, most adults could use a little more work on them, too.

 

I know I can.

 

I can always be more focused.

More disciplined.

More respectful.

More grateful.

More confident.

And more intentional about the vision I have for my life.

 

The truth is, we never outgrow the need to develop our character.

 

We’re all still learning.

We’re all still growing.

 

And perhaps that’s one of the greatest lessons we can teach our children:

We don’t just tell them what character looks like. We show them.

 

Because our children are watching.

 

And sometimes, the smallest moments-like saying “thank you” and “you’re welcome”- are where character is built.

 

Character isn’t just something you teach.
It’s something you live.
