The Next Rep: What Will You Do When Things Go Wrong?
This is test week at KMMA. Whether you’re preparing for your first rank test or you’re working toward an advanced Blackbelt test, there is something I want you to remember:
Your test will not go perfectly.
You may forget a technique. You may get tired. You may get nervous. You may make a mistake.
That is part of testing. The real question is not whether something goes wrong.
The real question is: What do you do next?
Watch This Week’s Lesson
Shihan Winston explores this idea in this week’s Lesson of the Week, The Next Rep.
Take a moment and click on the photo to watch the lesson, then consider how you can apply it—
not just during your test, but in whatever challenges come next.
You cannot change the rep you just completed. You cannot go back and redo it. But you can control the next one.
Take a breath. Reset. Get your focus back. Then execute the next rep.
This is one of the reasons we test. Testing isn’t simply about demonstrating techniques you’ve learned.
It gives you an opportunity to see how you perform when there is pressure, fatigue, and uncertainty.
That is where preparation becomes real.
And that lesson goes far beyond the dojo. Something goes wrong at school. At work. In a relationship. In life.
You may not control what happened.
You do control what you do next.
That is the mindset I want you carrying with you this week. Don’t let one mistake dictate the next moment.
Breathe. Reset. Execute the next rep.
Make the next rep count.
Watch the Lesson of the Week, talk about it with your family, and put the lesson into practice this week.
