The Next Rep Is Where Leadership Happens

In a bright martial arts dojo with blue floor mats and mirrored walls, a teenage or young adult instructor wearing a blue uniform top, black pants, and a black belt is kneeling on the floor. She is gesturing with her hand while talking to two children standing across from her. On the left, a young boy with curly blonde hair wears a black t-shirt, white uniform pants, and a green belt. On the right, another young boy with dark hair wears a black t-shirt, white pants, an orange belt, and blue hand pads. Other students and instructors are visible in the background out of focus.

As testing week comes to a close, I want to leave you with a simple idea.

     The next rep matters.

Not because the previous rep didn’t matter.

It did.

We learn from our mistakes. We make adjustments. We improve our preparation. But once that moment has passed, we have to move forward.

That’s true in martial arts.

And it’s true in life.

You will make mistakes.

You will have setbacks.

You will have moments when you are tired, frustrated, nervous, or uncertain.

You will not always be able to control what happens around you.

But you can control your response.

That is where leadership begins.

A Blackbelt is not someone who never struggles.

A Blackbelt is someone who has developed the discipline to keep working when the situation becomes difficult.

Someone who can recognize a mistake without allowing it to take control.

Someone who can reset and get back to the mission.

Someone who can take the next step even when the last one wasn’t perfect.

That is why testing matters.

We aren’t simply testing what you know.

We’re developing who you become under pressure.

So remember this the next time something doesn’t go your way:

Breathe. Reset. Execute the next rep.

You don’t get to choose every rep.

But you do get to choose what you do with the next one.

That’s the mindset of a Blackbelt Leader.
