The Mirror: A Lesson in Leadership

Sometimes a Mirror Doesn’t Create Distance. Sometimes it Creates Perspective.

Well… today didn’t go as planned.

For the past several weeks, I’ve poured my heart into promoting our first Back-to-School Success Seminar.

Families registered. We prepared. We were excited to welcome them.

But when it was time to begin… no one came.

As the Marketing Director, I’d be lying if I said it didn’t sting. I couldn’t help but wonder what I could have done differently. Looking out at an empty mat where we had hoped to welcome families was a difficult moment.

When I lifted my camera, my instinct wasn’t to step into the scene.

It was to observe it through the reflection.

I chose to photograph this through the mirror.

I think I know why.

In that moment, the reflection gave me just enough protection to document what was happening while I was still processing it myself.

But something changed.

While I was focused on who wasn’t there, Grandmaster Del Castillo was focused on who was.

He gathered those who had come to help, shared his wisdom, answered our questions, and turned what could have been a disappointing afternoon into one of the most valuable leadership lessons I’ve experienced.

In that moment, I realized this wasn’t a story about an empty mat.

It was a story about resilience.

It was a story about choosing to teach instead of giving in to disappointment.

About choosing to invest in the people in front of you instead of dwelling on the people who didn’t come.

About refusing to let one disappointing outcome define the mission.

As a photographer, I thought I was documenting disappointment.

Instead, I captured leadership.

Thank you, Grandmaster, for reminding all of us that setbacks don’t define us. 

They prepare us.

We’ll learn from today.

We’ll grow from today.

And we’ll be better because of it.
