The Dichotomy of Krav Maga Martial Arts

I decided to teach our basic class after the one I usually teach this morning and shared with them something that I decided to also share with you; the Dichotomy of our school and our system.

  • 1.a division or contrast between two things that are or are represented as being opposed or entirely different:
    • “a rigid dichotomy between science and mysticism”

What got me thinking about it was that I was teaching them krav maga self defense versus a choke from the front and choke from the front with a push.

My original intent was simply to let them feel the different energies so that they would understand why there are different techniques to defend against each.

But something interesting happened; I noticed that most of them were unwilling to push each other hard enough to achieve the “aha” experience I was looking for.

I of course explained the importance of giving the proper attack so that their partner could give the proper defense and they worked through the techniques and some drills to reinforce the lesson.

But the situation also got me thinking and led to the lesson that I closed with, and that I am sharing with you now; what I am calling the Dichotomy of my system- Krav Maga Martial Arts.

  • We teach students courtesy and respect, self control and self discipline. We are a leadership development academy that also happens to teach the most practical self defense system in the world.

Herein is the dichotomy, as I explained in the class today.

  • We want our students to be courteous, kind, respectful and controlled. We pray that none of them ever has to use the self defense skills they learn in class.
  • However, should any one of my students ever need to defend his or her self, family or others, I absolutely want them to be prepared to do so.
  • This is why we train realistically and aggressively while also teaching control and respect.

So while training for peace and training for war seem like two opposing ideas, we train both with the same seriousness and towards the same product.

On the way to Blackbelt, Krav Maga Martial Arts students become sufficiently skilled, fast, powerful, intense and aggressive to be dangerous; while also becoming sufficiently wise not to be.
