The ABCs of Success
The lesson of the week is The Blackbelt Success System.
You’ll get it in class, or you can watch it here.
We are also giving our intro to the ABCs of Success in our Basic Training class.
It’s the system students use to become confident and competent Blackbelt Leaders…
and the same system Blackbelt Leaders use to accomplish every other worthy goal in life.
The ABCs of Success are:
Technique– The techniques that we teach in our Blackbelt Leadership Program are not only the martial arts techniques of krav maga, kickboxing, karate and kali, but also the techniques that we teach students for success in the martial arts, in school, in career, relationships and life.
These include the Blackbelt Superpowers of Focus, Respect, Discipline, Confidence, Gratitude and Vision, our character development program, and techniques for mental and emotional control, decision making, teamwork, leadership and even public speaking. These techniques prepare students for Blackbelt Leadership Excellence in life!
Aim– We teach the students the importance of aim as pertains to them breaking a board with a sidekick. If they miss the target, striking the board too high or too low or, of course, missing the board all together, it will not break.
The same is true in life. Success is about hitting the mark. That’s why we teach students goal setting and goal getting skills, how to apply the Blackbelt Success System and the attitudes and aptitudes that favor success.
Back-up– Back-up body mass is the principle of putting all of ones body weight into every technique. It is essential to break the board.
Back-up is also essential to success in life. As with the case of any worthy goal, becoming a Blackbelt can be hard. And distractions, obstacles and set-backs will occur. When they do, it’s important that a student has back-up.
In the academy, this back-up includes the Sensei, parent and spouses and even other students of our tribe. These help the student stay focused on their goal, and remember why they set it in the first place.
After all, Discipline is the superpower that keeps us committed to our goal long after the excitement in which we set it wears off.
And like all of the elements of the Blackbelt Success System and Blackbelt Leadership itself, this system may be used again and again throughout one’s life. One common attribute of all really successful people is that they persevered when others quit. We develop students with the grit, attitudes and skills to do that.
Confidence- Confidence is essential. Not only do confident people achieve more, but they also lead more positive, productive, happy and fulfilled lives. We all know someone who struggles with anxiety. Confidence, our fourth Blackbelt Superpower is the anecdote to that.
Speed– Speed in the martial aspect of our martial art is obvious. In life and leadership, we call this “decisiveness”.
Studies have shown that the most successful people make decisions rapidly because they are clear on their values and what they really want for their lives.
