Testing Week: Don’t Chase the Last Rep

Inside a martial arts dojo with blue mats, a group of students in white uniforms and blue or black shirts practice stances. An instructor in a blue top and black pants stands in the center observing, while other students train in the background.

Testing week is here.

If you’re testing, you’ve already done the most important part: you prepared.

Now it’s time to trust that preparation and do the work.

One thing I want you to be especially aware of this week is what happens after a mistake.

You may miss a technique. You may forget what comes next. You may get tired and lose some of your sharpness.

When that happens, don’t chase the last rep. It’s gone.

Don’t spend your energy thinking about what you should have done. Don’t let one mistake turn into the next mistake.

Instead:

Breathe. Reset. Refocus. Execute the next rep.

That is something you can practice every time you train.

The goal isn’t perfection. The goal is to be prepared enough to recover, adjust, and continue when something doesn’t go according to plan.

That is part of becoming a Blackbelt.

So when you step onto the floor this week, give each rep everything you’ve got. If you make a mistake, learn from it. Then move forward.

The next rep is the one you can still control. Make it count.
