Team Tuesday Spotlight on Shihan Carolyn
Shihan Carolyn Borton is a KMMA mother and a KMMA Master Instructor.
Her son, Sensei Ben, started when he was four years old.
Mom watched from the sidelines for over two years when she realized this was something she had to do too.
I remember Mrs. Borton meeting with me and asking me if it was at all possible that she could catch her son so that they could test for their Blackbelt together.
I gave her an action plan and she set about making it happen.
Carolyn was the consummate student- taking multiple classes every week, and every Intensive Training Course (ITC), Krav Camp, rank camp and every other training opportunity she could get her hands on to get in the hours and the reps in order to get to Blackbelt with her son.
They earned their Certified Blackbelt together in September 2013.
Shihan Carolyn continued her intensive training regimen and was even a full time instructor at our dojo for a while.
She has made every single Krav Camp and Blackbelt Retreat since she began, keeps up her own training and continues to sow into the students and Blackbelt Leaders of KMMA as one of my trusted Master Instructors- the title she earned with her 4th degree promotion in Sept 2020.
Shihan Carolyn is a Senior UI/UX Lead Developer full time, but also one of my inner circle at KMMA, always willing to step up and help lead in every circumstance.
You’ll see her on the floor Wednesday nights and most Fridays, and also in Blackbelt classes, at Krav Camps and Blackbelt retreats, and stepping up to cover myself or another member of Team KMMA when needed. (With her son, Sensei Ben, often too)
She is the epitome of Blackbelt Leadership and another product of the product, and
I am proud and grateful to have her on my Team.

About Grandmaster Stephen J. Del Castillo: Grandmaster Del Castillo is the founding Master Instructor of Krav Maga Martial Arts and has been empowering lives in Pasco and Hillsborough Counties since October of 2000. He is a 7th degree Blackbelt, MBA, author, mentor and success coach, a US Army Veteran and a proud father and grandfather. He is married to Ms. Barbara Del Castillo who helps him run the school. Grand Master Del Castillo began his training in the early 80’s and has high level blackbelts in Tae Kwon Do, Karate, Premier Martial Arts and Krav Maga Martial Arts as well as experience in kickboxing, Jeet Kune Do and Jiujitsu. He has high level instructor certifications from BBSI, IKMF, and KMG and has been featured in numerous Martial Arts publications and also Success magazine. He was a competitive sport karate and American Kickboxing instructor until he enlisted in the US Army where he served in the 82nd Airborne Division, where he won an Army Green to Gold scholarship and proceeded to ROTC and the University of Tampa. He was commisioned in 1992 and went on to serve in Germany with the 3rd Infantry Division and then in several other posts in the US until he left military service to pursue his dream of creating KMMA in 2000.
