My Soup of the Soup Story

I tell a story in my leadership and instructor training classes about the soup of the soup.

   Here’s how it goes:

A brother and a sister were at their grandmother’s house one day and she made them some chicken soup.

They were amazed at how delicious it was, and told her she should start a restaurant!

She said no, that she only made the soup with love for those she loved; but the kids wanted to show all of their friends how delicious the soup was, so they invited some.

The friends agreed it was the best soup they had ever eaten, and invited their friends too. This went on and on until, eventually, the expense of feeding so many of her grandkids friends, and friends friends caused her to start adding a little more water to the soup, and then a little more….

until one day someone said, “I don’t understand what’s so special about this soup.”

For years I have taught this story to teach the moral that we have to be careful not to water down what has made our school, Krav Maga Martial Arts, so special- the things that I teach in my Certified Instructor Training (CIT) program and quarterly instructor bootcamps and weekly instructor training classes that make KMMA Sensei the best of the best.

But I’ve recently realized something special.

While we do maintain the key ingredients to keep our soup from ever becoming “the soup of the soup”, I have been blessed with great leaders that have also brought new ingredients to the recipe, and helped me make it even better.

Because we are a Blackbelt Leadership Academy, we produce leaders, and leaders of leaders and leaders who help me produce more leaders that produce more leaders.

And because we have great leaders, with great ideas, our soup keeps getting even better.

Today I’m proud and grateful for all of them.
