It Hurt Me When She Left

Selling Shula, my aqua pearl and silver 1992 Harley Davidson Fatboy, was one of the hardest things I ever had to do.

I mean, I’ve done a lot of hard things in the martial arts, and at the US Army Infantry and Airborne Schools, and then as a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne, and academically for my undergraduate and graduate degrees…

Well, I could go on and on with other things that were challenging physically and mentally, but I mean emotionally.

Selling Shula was one of the hardest things I’d had to do to that point. I loved her.

I remember laying in the bathe sulking on Veteran’s Day that year, because I normally ride.

And Shula wasn’t only a beautiful motorcycle, she and I had made all kinds of memories together in Germany, where I’d bought her through military car sales, and riding through Spain, Italy, France and Amsterdam to name a few of the great trips we shared.

Every time I got time off, from my duties as an Army Officer in the 3rd Infantry Division, Shula and I went on some great adventure.

But as much as I loved Shula, and cherished the many memories she and I had made riding together through Europe, I gave her up for something that I loved even more.

Shula helped me keep our school alive.

More on that here. It’s our lesson of the week.

And, by the way…

there is a happy ending.

I was able to buy Shula back a few years later and she’s back home where she belongs.

And, even greater, I get to see my Vision and Mission coming alive today.
