I’m Working on My Brain Health

“Optimal Nutrition is the most important factor in keeping your brain healthy; but feeding your brain is not something that most of us know how to do.”

      Dr. Mark Hyman

I am studying a course on functional health.

     You know how I’m a life-long learner.

If you have ever experienced the pain of declining brain health in a loved one, or even experienced a little of it yourself, you know how critical a topic this is.

I included a few notes from my morning session for you below.

Dr. Mark Hyman:

  • we increase brain health by taking out the bad stuff and putting in the good stuff.
  • we get too much stress and toxins, and too little healthy food.
  • eliminate sugar. not just bad fro your health in all the other ways you should also know about, but also creates depression.
    • The average American consumes about 152 lbs of sugar per year. many kids consume about 32 tspns per day, and nearly 1-4 kids are pre-diabetic. Dr. says was never the case back when he was in med school, but is indicative of the new sugar epidemic.
  • eliminate flour- which raises your blood sugar even more than table sugar.
  • so eliminate all processed and refined carbohydrates for diet.
  • realize that, if you do choose to consume sugar occasionally, that it’s a recreational drug; not a staple of your diet.
  • eat REAL food– whole, organic, unprocessed food. that means lots of colorful fruits and veggies. Lots of leafy greens. Cauliflower and ice cream are both carbs; but you know they’re not the same when it comes to your health.
  • eat plenty of healthy fat. our brain is mostly made of fat, and fat are the most important nutrients for our bran. in fact 60% of your brain is made from DHA- Omega 3 fat, like in seafood. eat lots of healthy fats like wild fatty fish, nuts and seeds, olive oil, avocado etc
    • remove bad fats, like vegetable oils (especially soy oil) and other omega 6
  • eat lots of healthy protein from omega 3 eggs, grass fed meat, fatty fish and nits and seeds
  • finally, supplement wisely- high quality multi-vitamin, magnesium, E3 and omega 3 fats as fish oil, probiotics and B vitamins

“Just following these few steps can greatly increase your overall health and brain function.”

    Dr. Hyman again

I am very grateful for this information and I hope it was useful to you too.

I also will act on it all.

It is one of my core beliefs that knowledge without action is useless.

By the way, in addition to better nutrition, increased exercise and other positive activities that stimulate our mind and produce happiness hormones (like serotonin, dopamine and oxytocin) are also greatly conducive to improved mental health.

Krav Maga Martial Arts is just such an activity.
