How Will It End?

How will it end?

The great news is, that’s up to you.

In the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, Dr. Stephen Covey teaches “Begin With The End In Mind” as the second of seven life changing principles to live a happier, more productive and more successful life.

Beginning with the end in mind means having a clear vision and plan for our life, and also for any specific project, area or goal in life that we hope to accomplish- and then also ensuring we take the actions that move us that direction (of the end in mind).

The concept is relevant in academic and business pursuits, in relationships and in the martial arts.

In the latter, both for its own sake and also as an analogy to and a preparation for success in all the rest, we paint the vision clearly.

The goal is to BECOME a Blackbelt.

The goal of every martial arts student is to punch like a blackbelt, kick like a blackbelt, be fast, powerful, focused and fit like a blackbelt;

the goal is also to have the discipline, grit, courtesy, modesty, integrity, perseverance, self control and other leadership skills that define a blackbelt.

But every student begins the same- as a white belt. It is the white belts job, and the job of the Sensei (teachers) that have gone before to paint the vision of what it will be to be a blackbelt, while the student is still a beginner.

Then this knowledge, humility, hunger and Vision pulls the student towards the accomplishment of this worthy goal.

In the 4 or so years it takes the student is transformed into the vision and becomes the Blackbelt he began with the vision of in his mind those years before.

This is one of the reasons that KMMA Blackbelts seem to have super-powers! Both the results of the process and the process itself prepare the Blackbelt for all that’s next, in the martial arts, in leadership and in life.

Today I am grateful for Sensei Kyle Bierly and his leadership within KMMA and our whole community. He is a model student, excellent instructor and a positive influence on everyone he meets, including our students and other instructors, and even I. His commitment to excellence is beyond reproach and his example to be edified and emulated. He’s a role model to his students, instructors and everyone.

I’m also grateful to his father who entrusted him to me. I remember like yesterday the day 4 year old KJ (for Kyle Junior as Sensei Kyle was called then) wanted to quit along with his friend who did. I asked his father to give me time with him and i promised I would make him proud that he did. He did. Skip a few years and Kyle Senior came to me at his son’s 3rd Degree promotion just a couple of weeks ago to thank me personally for keeping my promise to him. It made me cry then and i’m crying again now just writing this. I am deeply honored and grateful to both of these great men for the opportunity to be a part of sowing into Sensei Kyle’s life then and for having his help in sowing into our next generation of leaders today! Osu!
