Here’s to the Heroes: How to be One

For this winning Wednesday, I want to start by shouting out to the heroes.

I salute all the police and military, health care providers, firemen and other first responders.

I also salute the moms and dads, teachers and preachers, laborers, businessmen and entrepreneurs who do their duties well.

It’s true that some people willingly put their lives on the lines every day for the protection of others, and these people definitely deserve our respect, gratitude and admiration.

They are heroes.

But in my meditation this morning, I will argue that all who do their duty, that do what they were called to do, and do it well, are heroes.

The dictionary defines a hero as

noun
  1. 1.
a person who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities.
    “a war hero”
    or in another,

    1. a man of distinguished courage or ability, admired for his brave deeds and noble qualities.
    2. any person who has heroic qualities or has performed a heroic act and is regarded as a model or ideal.
    3. the principal male character in a story, play, film, etc.
    4. a person who is greatly admired; idol.
    5. (in antiquity) an individual possessing godlike prowess and beneficence who often came to be honored as a divinity.
Ok, had a little fun with that……
but, barring the sandwich, my argument is that you can choose this day to be a hero in whatever calling you are charged with.
As a parent, choose to be one of courage and ability, admired for your brave deeds and noble qualities.
As a friend, student, teacher, employee, manager, business owner, entrepreneur…
Take a moment to write down all of your important roles in life- the things that you are called specifically to do.
Then choose to do them well, with excellence.
             Be a hero this day.
