Front vs back stage activity

It’s often what we do front stage, when the lights are shining, that people notice; but it’s what we do backstage to prepare for the show that determines the result.

When the fighter steps into the ring, the athlete the arena, the speaker the stage, the teacher the classroom or the businessman the boardroom, that front stage performance is a direct reflection of the amount of backstage preparation he or she has done.

While the public victory happens front stage, the work that got us there is often done in private.

My weekly Blackbelt Leadership Seminars are an example of this.

So is our Krav Camp, Blackbelt Retreat and Testing, Graduation ceremonies and other public events. Every great event has a lot of backstage work that make it happen.

It’s even true of every class.

The same is true of your belt testing this month!

Many of you reading this will be testing for new rank this month. When it’s time for testing, you’re in the spotlight- and so is all the training and practice that you did between the last test and this one.

We don’t have to know whether you’ve properly prepared or not. It’ll show in your performance.

The same is true of every test in life.

The show, the test at school, the project, the presentation, the trial, the tribulation- even the self defense situation.

When the moment of truth arrives, all you or I can do is perform.

How well or poorly we do that is based on the amount of backstage work we’ve done.

I’ve been doing a lot of backstage work this week, with my book and preparing for lots of great upcoming front stage events!
