Focus to WIN

What’s Important Next (WIN)
A Meditation, a Method, and a Message for Your Life and Leadership

Every once in a while, I get a reminder—not from a book, a seminar, or even a conversation—but from the quiet space in my own mind while driving to the dojo.

Today was one of those moments.

The reminder was simple, but it hit me hard:

Focus WIN to win.

WIN: What’s Important Next.

When I’m laser-focused on WIN, life feels simple. Productive. Powerful.

When I’m not, it’s almost always because of one thing:

👉 I’m allowing myself to be distracted by something that is not what’s important next.

And that’s where overwhelm comes from—not from having too much to do, but from losing focus on the next thing that actually matters.

Over the years, I’ve learned there are three types of Focus every Blackbelt Leader must master if they want to WIN—
in school, in business, in fitness, in life… and certainly on the mat.

Let’s break them down.

1. Focus WIN in Priorities

Use your TEA (Time, Energy, Attention) intentionally.

We all have:

  • Roles

  • Goals

  • A direction we say we want to go

  • A future we are working toward

But clarity doesn’t matter without focus.

Your TEA—your Time, Energy, and Attention—are your three most precious assets. When you pour them into the wrong things, even good things, you lose momentum.

When you pour them into WIN—What’s Important Next—you accelerate toward your future reality.

Blackbelt Leaders choose their next action based on priority, not reaction.

2. Focus WIN in Your Schedule

Tell your time where to go instead of wondering where it went.

Everyone has enough time.
But not everyone has enough focus.

Time blocking changed the game for me, and I’ve seen it change the game for my sensei, our students, and my family too.

If you don’t decide in advance where your time goes, the world will decide for you.

When you put your WIN into your calendar first:

  • Your day becomes simpler

  • Your stress goes down

  • Your momentum goes up

  • Distractions lose their power

  • And your victories pile up faster than you expect

A scheduled WIN is a guaranteed win.

3. Focus Your Inputs on Your WIN

Your future depends on what you feed your mind today.

This is a big one.

The things I’m studying and consuming at this stage—
at 56, leading two schools, building a franchise model, raising future Blackbelt leaders, and improving my own health—
are very different than what I chose in my 20s, 30s, or even early 40s.

Because what’s important next changes as your mission evolves.

If your input doesn’t match your WIN, it becomes noise.

But when your input is aligned with your WIN, it becomes fuel.

Ask yourself:

  • What am I reading?

  • What am I watching?

  • Who am I listening to?

  • What ideas am I letting into my mind?

Are they helping you build the future you want—or pulling you back into the past you came from?

Blackbelt leaders guard their inputs.
Because inputs become beliefs, beliefs become actions, and actions create outcomes.

When you Focus WIN, you win—not by luck, but by design.

One WIN at a time.
  One day at a time.
    One decision at a time.

That’s the Blackbelt way.
  That’s the leadership way.
And that’s how we build confident, competent Blackbelt Leaders—
in the dojo, in school, in business, and in life.
