FOCUS: The first Superpower, and Applying it to Business and Life

The first of the 6 Blackbelt Foundational Superpowers that I write about in my book, and that we teach at KMMA, is Focus.

The basic definition of it is in my meme above, but there is so much more.

We also often think about kids when we think about Focus- clearly it is an attribute that we need to help every child develop, for success at school, in sports and the martial arts and, frankly, in everything they seek to succeed at for the rest of their lives.

But Focus is critically important for us too.

I’m speaking to other adults now.

And I am speaking to the basic definition of the power described above, but to a deeper manifestation of it.

The basic application of Focus as the ability to block out distractions and concentrate on what’s important is relatively obvious:

  • Focus on your school work or the work of your job or calling- instead of being distracted by your friends, facebook, phone, or other distractions.
  • Focus on quality time with the person or people you’re with, instead of the phone or other distraction, or even thoughts or worries about anything else.
  • Focus on work while at work, home while at home, school while at school and your training while at the dojo; wherever you are, that’s where you should be.

But there is another, equally or even more important, level of the Focus superpower that is harder to develop and harder to stick to.

For me, things don’t always work out the way I wish they would. You?

I mean, sometimes they do; truly, more often than not.

But sometimes things don’t go according to my plan and, in fact, sometimes they don’t to the point that I let it make me temporarily upset.

This is where the higher form of Focus comes in.

There are a few of our Blackbelt Leadership Principles that apply 100% to the understanding of this form of Focus that I want us to Focus upon:

  • Life is 10% what happens and 90% how we react to what happens.
  • Everything happens for a reason and it serves me well (even if I can’t see it at that time).
  • We get more of what we Focus on.

So, in my personal and professional life, it’s important that I don’t allow myself to stay upset too long.

If I do, I will apply my Focus to the wrong thing, to the detriment of what I want to produce instead.

Our thoughts create emotions which create actions which produce results.

We MUST Focus on what we CAN control and not what we can not; on what we want, and not what we do not.

This is the simple, not easy, secret to winning.

I needed this reminder today. You?
