Floaters Suck

So apparently I had a vitreous detachment the other day.

I was at a friend’s house, buying a trailer for the dojo, when I was attacked by an armada of floating black dots.

Having never heard of vitreous detachment, nor even floaters, to that point in my life, it kind of freaked me out.

After trying, to no avail, to fight the little aliens off, I sat down to try deep breathing and relaxing; I thought maybe I was having a stroke or something.

Anyways, at the advice of my friend and KMMA Blackbelt Dr. Mike, I went to see the Perez brothers- friends of his that are eye and retina specialists.

Dr. Mike had consulted with them and said it was important I check and make sure I wasn’t having a retinal detachment.

Well, long story short, I am grateful to say that my retina is in tact and the doctors said that I really have nothing to worry about that, get this, vitreal detachment is a normal part of aging that normally happens after age 50.

  Who knew…

I didn’t.

I’ll tell you what else; though I am relieved to know that the condition is nothing serious, that does little to affect how annoying the floaters are.

The ones regularly spiraling within my left eye even as I write this message to you look like small cob webs, or eye lashes, or aliens…

I’m not going to lie; they’re exceedingly bothersome and make reading and writing much harder than it was before, and serve as an annoying distraction throughout the day.

It is said that they will one day disappear.

   I look forward to this.

But I’ll tell you what I am really grateful for- all the KMMA Blackbelt Leadership principles that help me get through this and other troubles.

When the going gets tough, I always remember to practice what I teach.

The Blackbelt Leadership Principles that life is 10% what happens and 90% how we react to it, the lesson on “cinching the belt”, and that everything happens for a reason and serves me well, come right to mind.

The latter is a bit elusive, but I’ll give it a go:

1. while I am good at dealing with challenges wherein I can create a plan and take massive action on it, I have a harder time dealing with things I can’t control. Perhaps God wants me to work on that element of patience.

2. them darned floaters gave me something to write to you about.

We create confident and competent blackbelt leaders, prepared to survive and thrive in any situation.

   Even floaters.
