Flip a Coin
The other day I was taking a business course, on hiring and interviewing, and the teacher shared something that I thought would be useful in so many circumstances and environments, not just in business.
It was during the Q&A section at the end of the workshop and someone asked Joe, the COO teaching the class, how he decides which candidate to hire when several are qualified and meet the other requirements he’s looking for too.
All of his answer was great advice but I’m going to skip to the last piece that I think could be useful to all of us in many scenarios:
Joe said that when all else fails he flips a coin.
yeah, I had a similar response too.
But what he went on to say was pure gold.
Joe said that, after he gets down to two possible choices and then flips a coin and after doing so, he looks at who won the toss and sees how it makes him feel.
“The feeling you get will tell you how you really feel about the decision in the first place”, he said.
So, if you feel relieved you know; and if you feel disappointed, you know.
I thought it was a great approach and I can’t wait for a scenario in which to try it. 🙂

About Grandmaster Stephen J.
