Fantastic Friday Training – Building a Great Team

Yesterday somebody commented on one of my facebook posts and said “you got a great team sir”.

I thanked them.

And upon reflecting on my sentiment about the comment, I realized I was not just grateful- but proud.

I was first cautious of that, but then realized that it was not the bad kind of pride that comes before the fall, but just another kind of gratitude- that feeling that comes from accomplishment when your hard work pays off.

You see, I do have a great team.

And yet, this great team is composed largely of more relative new additions than many of my other great teams that have come before.

There are three lessons for my fellow leaders:

  1. Having a great team is not an accident but conversely hard work and our most important job.
  2. It’s an all the time job. I have come to the realization that, of all the important work that I do, the hiring, training and development of dream team is my first and foremost responsibility and,
  3. Not a job to be done “when I need to” but rather one I always need to focus on.

And I strongly suspect that this is true for most organizations that strive to be great.

I’m not going to write more on the subject but close with two comments and two questions:

  1. KMMA is a leadership development academy that also happens to teach the most practical self defense in the world. Therefore, every KMMA student is at once a member of a great team, the benefactor of the excelence of my dream team and learning to be a great leader too!
  2. Like all things leadership, team building is a science and an art and can be learned. Just as with our martial arts, practice under the right mentors can prepare you for excellence in this skill too.

The questions are:

a. Would you like to be a member of the KMMA Dream Team one day?

b. Do you own a business or lead an organization such that you would appreciate some furhter focused training on team building skills?

I look forward to hearing from you.
