Do You Love What You Do? Part Two

Today I am grateful that so many of you got so much out of my Do You Love What You Do? blog I wrote recently.

In fact, I’d like to respond to one of the questions a follower asked in this follow-up.

She said, “so what if you are in a job you don’t love to do, but can’t afford to quit it.”

So, in this blog, I would like to answer with 3 possible solutions; and you may apply one or all of them, if this question also applies to you.

1. Consider the 3 levers that I shared in the original blog. Pulling any one of them can add satisfaction and meaning to the work that you do.

2. Change course. I will be the first to acknowledge both that:

     a. changing course too often can be an absolute limitation to ever staying on one course long enough top achieve any real success; and success breeds contentment.

     b. the longer that you have invested on a certain course, the harder it can be to change, for many reasons.

But I will also say that nobody should choose to live a life of discontent, so the better options come down to:

     a. change what you do,

     b. change your attitude about what you do,

     c. change something about how you do it that makes it better.

Reference the last suggestion, greater Focus and/or higher levels of commitment and activity can often be the magic that can change the trajectory of a career.

3. Add something apart from your work that will add purpose, excitement, empowerment and contentment to your life.

This could be a hobby, ministry or calling outside of one’s vocation.

I have even known some very successful people that started this way, and later turned their passion into their livelihood as well…

come to think of it, I am one of them.

I trained and taught martial arts in college and throughout my military career; not for money but for meaning.

And today I get to lead an organization that not only empowers students lives, but also empowers others to do what we love for their living.

On the other hand, many of my KMMA students already have successful careers or are even retired, and yet find purpose, passion and joy growing and sowing in our Blackbelt Leadership Program.

They probably just smiled when they read this.

And, like me, they’re probably hoping you’ll come and see.
