do it for yourself and your loved ones
I was drinking my morning coffee this morning and, in transparency, thinking about what I might write about today.
After all, I shared on the 7 Superpowers last and, so, I could write something on the 7 Blackbelt Leadership lessons, or self defense, or something going on in our world.
And then a jingle dropped into my mind from my past- I bet you’ll remember it too.
I can’t even remember exactly what the commercial was for ironically; I could google it now but that’s not even relevant to where the memory took me, the meditation that I want to share today.
What the jingle message was is “if you don’t do it for yourself, do it for the loved ones in your life”.
You’re hearing it now too aren’t you? 🙂
I’m not sure if that jingle dropping in my head was Holy Spirit, random thought or just what my subconscious uncovered when I asked the question “what am I going to write about today”.
But as always, I am grateful.
I have a twist on the message of the jingle for you this morning though.
As I’ve already alluded, I don’t even remember nor am going to look up what the original message actually was……
But what if we reframe it in the form of a question?
What should you do for yourself, and/or for the loved ones in your life?
I hope you’ll take some moments of reflection answering this question for yourself, but here are a few of the answers that spring forth for me:
-
Take care of yourself: eat better, sleep better, exercise, relax.
-
Spend more quality time doing things that are fun and productive- for yourself and with the loved ones in your life.
-
Equip your children for the challenges of adult life, and empower them and yourself with confidence and leadership.
-
Learn practical self defense skills to walk in peace and overcome the mental and physical threats that come from bullies and bad guys.
-
Be happy. I honestly believe that every day we have a choice. We can focus on things that aren’t ideal or we can focus on all we have to be grateful for. It is my philosophy, and one that I share with my students, that we should be happy not content. I am super grateful for all the blessings in my life and all that I have to be grateful for AND also on Constant and Neverending Improvement (CANI) and, in this way, live happy while also getting better every day in every way and moving closer and closer to all of my goals.
As I was creating the list above in honest response to the question I posed to all of us, I am also moved to these closing observations:
-
I am so grateful for all the great people and other blessings in my life and also that I can follow my own advice and use the list above to continue improving life for myself and all the people that I love.
-
I am so grateful for the purpose and mission I get to live. At Krav Maga Martial Arts, we prepare youth and families to live (survive and thrive) in any circumstance, and empower them to lead; with the Focus, Respect, Discipline, Confidence, Gratitude and Vision to do so and also the leadership training and development to do so well!
-
We can help any and all of you reading this message to do the same for you and your family. If you are already a student, you know this and I am grateful for and proud of you! If you’re not yet, we have family classes where you and your spouse and your kids can all have fun, exercise, learn real world self defense and grow as people and leaders Together! There is nothing better than that.
But don’t take my word for it.

Stephen Del Castillo
Founder & Chief Master Instructor, Krav Maga Martial Arts
“Seven years ago I brought my then 3 year old son and 6 year old daughter into the KMMA dojo to start a self defense program. What we received was so much more. I thought that self-discipline and focus might be an indirect benefit of training but how refreshing it is for a parent to discover that leadership skills are a primary benefit packaged within a fun, physical self-defense program. Grand Master delivers powerful leadership lessons that are relatable to kids and equally meaningful to adults. Seven years ago I decided that rather than check my phone or get some extra work done on Saturday morning that instead I would jump on the mat during the family class for fun and just to give it a try. I never regretted that impulsive decision to get a little exercise that day.
Grand Master’s Blackbelt Leadership Training Program is the secret to success! The exciting, educational and entertaining classes create the physical and mental toughness and leadership skills required to succeed on the Blackbelt test and at life!
And the built in Certified Instructor Training is a bonus! I never thought I’d actually teach but the training helped me with my leadership position at USF. It still does and now I get to help teach too!
Grand Master teaches leadership skills that build character and enhance self-esteem while brilliantly connecting the applicability of the lessons to life in and out of the dojo with the sharpness of laser beam focus.
If you are not part of the program yet, fix that!”

KMMA 2nd degree Blackbelt and proud parent of Luna Cummings, KMMA 1st degree Blackbelt and Flynn Cummings, KMMA Junior Blackbelt
