Did You PARI?

So, as we end the last quarter and start the new one, and a new month, did you PARI?

PARI is a Blackbelt Leadership tool we use to realize CANI (Constant and Never-ending Improvement).

PARI stands for:

Plan

Act

Review

Improve

So, step one is you must have a plan.

We plan our work and then work our plan.

And, by the way, this applies to all areas of your life you’d like to take charge of- physical, professional, mental, relational, financial, emotional, or something you really wanna do, like write a book, or travel or raise great kids, or whatever.

You start with your goals and then make your plan.

The plan is just deciding what’s going to happen instead of waiting to see.

Step two is you must act.

A good plan executed now is better than a perfect plan executed next week (Patton said it before I did).

So, if you had a plan for the first quarter, in any area, you move on to the next step.

If you didn’t, and have any desire in improving in any area of your life, then get off the analysis paralysis and make a plan (quickly) and then get to work on it!

You want to be able to move on to the next two steps in June!

Don’t be back having not had a plan to act on if that is where you find yourself today!

Step three is Review.

This is where we measure our progress on our goals and analyze what happened.

It’s like the After-Action Review (AAR) we used to do in the military.

The plan identified what we would do; the AAR defines what actually happened and the results of it.

So, we assess:

  1. Where we did or didn’t execute the plan well and
  2. wherein we did, how that plan worked.

This allows us to move on to the final step- make a new plan that will cause us to improve our results the next time.

The process isn’t a guarantee of success; but is a tool to approach the process intelligently, and at least improve our chances.

That last point is important.

I think some people never plan because they’re afraid to fail.

That’s like not training in self-defense because the idea of violence is scary.

That training isn’t a guarantee either- but I do guarantee you are less ready for what could happen without it.

Planning to get what we want out of our life, instead of “going with the flow” or waiting to see what happens is like that.

It makes you the primary actor in your own experience, instead of a passive observer or, worse, a victim.

By the way, I’ll share my review on a couple of my 1st quarter goals:

  1. I did identify and hire a new Program Director and Director of First Impressions!
  2. Our growth was a little slow, but growth nonetheless- we were up a little over 3% from first quarter last year.
  3. Same with my weight loss. I lost just under 5 lbs.

Now I can do something with that.

I will train my new hires, and they will be great!

The growth is much slower than the 24% between ’21 and ’22, but better than loss. I am working on the modifications to make sure we do better.

And same with my weight loss. I lost 40 lbs. last year my target is to do that again, so I should have lost 10 lbs. instead of 5 to hit that target…

now, I’m sharing these to make this important point about the process:

  1. by measuring, being aware and being deliberate, I have a better chance of getting my goals AND (drum roll this is a big one)
  2. even if I FAIL, I will be far better off than if I hadn’t tried and/or wasn’t paying attention (applying the process).

Isn’t this exciting news?

Anyways, I got to go right now. I got some ACTion to do in each of these areas!

But I’d love to hear from you!

How does this blog apply to you? Tell me about your progress or what you plan to do.

Then I can help you.
