Decisiveness

The man who doesn’t reach decisions promptly when he has all necessary facts in hand cannot be depended on to carry out decisions after he makes them.

There is no one right answer — but an endless number of right answers — to most of life’s problems. Usually, your options are many and varied; the difficulty lies in choosing the best alternative from among many, all in a reasonable time frame. If you devote yourself to making small decisions promptly, you will find it much easier to be decisive when the stakes are much bigger. Most important, you’ll find making decisions and acting on them far easier if you act promptly.

Napoleon Hill

Decisiveness is such an important and rare leadership trait. I remember many years ago being evaluated on the 23 leadership dimensions alongside other cadets training to be officers in the US Army.

We each had our own unique strengths and liabilities, of course, and we all worked to make our strengths stronger and our weaknesses cease to be liabilities; just like we do with our Blackbelt Leadership Training students at Krav Maga Martial Arts today.

Fortunately, decisiveness is one of the dimensions I most often always received the coveted “O’ for outstanding.

I say fortunately because I think the ability to make quick decisions and then quickly and aggressively act upon them is one of the most important traits of a leader- or for success at anything for that matter. I have seen far too many would be leaders fall prey to analysis paralysis and therefore fail to accomplish the mission or their goals.

This is The Thinker, a famous bronze statue by Auguste Rodin.

But do you know what The Thinker’s real name was?

Of course not! Nobody else does either, because he spent too much time thinking and never got around to deciding and acting!

Last thing on the subject and I’ll be done for today.

Just get moving! Don’t wait to get everything right. You can only learn to ride a bike by doing it; so what are you going to decide, learn, act, do today?
