Day one

Today many of my students, along with a couple million other kids in Florida, started back to school!

In most cases, the parents and the kids as well are excited to start back- and of course facebook is flooded with pics of all these wonderful children as they enthusiastically begin their next year of school.

The first years, like those kindergarten and 1st grades, are especially memorable. They represent first times for the children and first times for the parents too.

One day, the child will graduate from high school and be off to college and/or their career;

I can tell you by experience, these years pass too quickly.

My grandson Triton on his first day of first grade at Sanders Elementary School. He’s very excited.

First days of martial arts training are the same way too.

I can still remember my first intro class, and that was 40 years ago.

In the 21 years that I have been teaching martial arts professionally,  I have had the great honor and privilege of training up hundreds of great Blackbelt Leaders.

Many went on to full ride scholarships in college, and all went on to become successful leaders in professional fields: some law, some business, some the military or the ministry.

Taylor Hixson is one of my first generation Blackbelts who went on to a successful career as a US Navy Officer and Aviator.

But whatever calling my Blackbelt Leaders go on to do, they all have two things in common.

  1. They have been equipped with the Focus, Respect, Discipline, Confidence, Gratitude and Vision, plus the grit, attitude and leadership training, to be successful in whatever they do.
  2. Every Blackbelt started as a white belt and had a day one.
