build them and they will go
It was hard letting my son Diego off to the Army a couple of weeks ago.
I wrote about that and about gratitude for the great times we’ve had together in my blog post “Cause Nothing Else Matters”. You can read it here.
But my confession and meditation today is that it is hard every time one of my Blackbelt Leaders goes.
In the same way that it is our job to raise up our children in the way they should go as parents, it is mine to prepare them to go in my dojo.
While some will stay and help me for a season, Team KMMA and I build Blackbelt Leaders up with Confidence, Competence, Courage, Candor, Commitment and a host of Blackbelt Leadership Principles and Skills- and then they leave us.
It’s a bittersweet Mission. In fact, for years I didn’t get it and I took it really hard when I poured my heart and soul into my Sensei and then they would leave me.
But now I do get it. I build them so they will go. It’s exactly what we prepare them to do through our Blackbelt Leadership Training Program.
Our Vision is to improve individuals, families and society one Blackbelt at a time.
Our mission: To raise up tomorrow’s leaders today by providing the culture, training, environment and opportunities to the youth, teens, and adults can grow into the leaders they are called to be – in their homes, communities, country and world.
By definition we build them up so that they can go.
Our Blackbelt Leaders go forth to be leaders in their homes, in business, ministry, community, the military and they improve our world.
We equip them with the attitude and aptitude for success, the weapons to win the war (of the mind) and the Leadership skills not only to be productive and happy contributors to society, but to find their voice and help others to do the same.
Today I realize that rather than be remorseful when my Blackbelt Leaders reach maturity and are ready to launch, I am proud of and excited for them.
After all it’s every young person’s call to go forth and affect their world; just as it is ours to prepare them!
The conundrum of course is that it means we are always having to begin again developing new leaders for our mission.
But this is in fact no problem at all, but rather our purpose and calling.
It is what we do.
Prepare to Live,
Empower to Lead!
