Becoming a Blackbelt

KMMA Student,

I hope you will share this with your kids if they’re the one on the quest- and join them if you’re not yet. 😉

The quest to Blackbelt Excellence, Blackbelt Leadership and to the Blackbelt and progressive degrees thereof is not an easy one.

It takes Focus, Determination, Hard Work, Perseverance, Modesty, and Indomitable Spirit- which is just a fancy way of saying that you develop an attitude of winning that never quits and do whatever it takes to accomplish your goals!

I am writing you this message to tell you 3 important things as your teacher, guide, master instructor and friend:

1.   You are on the journey! ENJOY it! Savor every lesson, every workout, the accompishment of every goal and every victory! Have fun!

2.   Always be willing to challenge yourself!

You know how in class the Sensei ask, “Are you ready for a challenge” and you say “bring it on sir!” Have that attitude over every worthy goal. Rather at school, home, work or in the dojo, when someone challenges you to take a next step that can improve your performance and your life, don’t think about it too hard. Don’t wonder if you can do it. Say yes! And then figure out how you will succeed!

3.   Celebrate your successes and those of others!

The third is of course a very timely message, because we have testing next week and then the Blackbelt Extravaganza (celebration) October 3!

Every student that tests and passes next week will be promoted to the next rank at this event. But it’s especially important you come to help celebrate the Blackbelts. They are doing what Blackbelts do- leading the way through example. 4

Sensei Diego Del Castillo and Sensei Carolyn Borton are testing for their 4th Degree Master ranks!

Sensei Kyle Bierly is testing for his 3rd Degree and Sensei Sarah Church, Michelle Cummings and Aryana Scrimshaw are testing for their 2nd.

All of these are great accomplishments worthy of praise!

I can’t wait to celebrate each of them, and each of you, as you each and all take your next steps towards Blackbelt Execellence and Mastery.

On the Quest,

Shihan Stephen J. Del Castillo
