Balance

I was talking to my Tuesday night Blackbelt class about balance.

Balance is crucial to the martial arts; you can tell the difference between a novice and an advanced blackbelt by the quality of their balance and footwork.

The same is true in life and, just as with the physical example, it takes time and practice.

I have still not mastered life balance, though I get better every year.

The specific type of balance, that I chose to focus most of my teaching on Tuesday, is that between Gratitude and Vision.

This is also the balance between humble and hungry, another way of expressing the balance between the blackbelt superpowers of gratitude and vision.

What I am really talking about here, said even more clearly, is that we should be always grateful for how far we’ve come

AND always striving to be better.

One example is a new Blackbelt’s journey.

Every Blackbelt should be so very proud of their accomplishment.

Most people never even begin and, of those that do, many quit.

So, the very act of achieving Blackbelt is a huge accomplishment that every Blackbelt should be proud of.

But, on the other hand, every Blackbelt that has continued on will tell you that they learned more in the first year after achieving Blackbelt than in all the years before.

And a Master has a degree of confidence, competence and understanding that few will ever know.

And it’s like this with every type of knowledge.

Most don’t even try to learn or get better- at work, at relationships, at communication, at leadership, at whatever….

And, of those that do, most make the novice mistake of thinking that a foundational understanding is enough,

instead of realizing that learning and improving in every important area of life is a lifelong process!

And I’ll share one last secret before calling this blog a wrap for today:

it’s FUN, as well as the most important thing one can do to create the levels of success one may wish to experience in any area of life.

Be balanced.

Be grateful AND hungry, with a definite desire and Vision for your life!

This one choice can make all the difference.

This is the way.
