23 Years of Kaizen
KMMA Blackbelt Dr. Michael Reisman sent me this article this morning.
I love it!
And, as he suggested, I will get many teachings, blogs, posts and mat chats out of it.
I have always been fascinated with Japanese culture, and especially the ancient and more traditional aspects of it.
As a little known fact, when I opened my dojo 23 years ago, it was called Daimyo- in homage to the customs and traditions of japanese martial art and, particularly, the Samurai code of Bushido.
Our academy has evolved so much since then!
Our Bushido, as well as our complete Blackbelt Leadership Program, that develops confident and competent Blackbelt Leaders, has come a long way since October 2000.
I am proud and grateful for all the growth and learning that has happened since then.
One doesn’t survive and thrive for 23 years having not made a few mistakes, and learned a few tings along the way.
But I am so proud and grateful of who we are today- our system, program, curriculum, leadership team, blackbelts, tribe and community!
I’ll be teaching all the classes, along with my sons and some other great Blackbelts of mine that have grown up in the dojo, this Saturday, October 28 2023.
23 years from the day we started.
And yes, that’s Shihan Harley in my arms.
And yes, he’ll be here helping me make it a great day.
He’s 23 now too. 🙂

1200: Level 1/2 (freshman and sophomore Blackbelt Training) yellow-green
1230-1:30: Self Defense Smeinar for all levels (see above)
2pm: Level 3/4: (juniors and seniors) brown, red, probationary and certified (1st Degree) Blackbelts

About Grandmaster Stephen J. Del Castillo: Grandmaster Del Castillo is the founding Master Instructor of Krav Maga Martial Arts and has been empowering lives in Pasco and Hillsborough Counties since October of 2000. He is a 7th degree Blackbelt, MBA, author, mentor and success coach, a US Army Veteran and a proud father and grandfather. He is married to Ms. Barbara Del Castillo who helps him run the school. Grand Master Del Castillo began his training in the early 80’s and has high level blackbelts in Tae Kwon Do, Karate, Premier Martial Arts and Krav Maga Martial Arts as well as experience in kickboxing, Jeet Kune Do and Jiujitsu. He has high level instructor certifications from BBSI, IKMF, and KMG and has been featured in numerous Martial Arts publications and also Success magazine. He was a competitive sport karate and American Kickboxing instructor until he enlisted in the US Army where he served in the 82nd Airborne Division, where he won an Army Green to Gold scholarship and proceeded to ROTC and the University of Tampa. He was commisioned in 1992 and went on to serve in Germany with the 3rd Infantry Division and then in several other posts in the US until he left military service to pursue his dream of creating KMMA in 2000.
