Who are you helping?

One of my favorite mentors once taught me that “You will get all you want in life if you help enough other people get what they want,”…

now some of my mentors are real live teachers of mine, and others, like the one that taught me this principle, were mentors via book, audio and video lessons.

The mentor was the late, great Zig Ziglar; mentor to me and millions of aspiring leaders over his years.

I am blassed indeeed because my team and I get to help so many others to accomplish their wildly important goals.

Some come for fitness, some for focus, others for discipline, confidence, respect or self control in their kids.

Many come to learn real world self defense.

My team and I get to help all of them to get what they want!

On top of that, I get to help my team get what they want.

Some come and work through high school, college or another season of life- some want a career.

I get to help each and all of them get what they want too!

And by helping others get what they want, I get, like Zig said, what I want in life.

So my two questions for you are:

  1. Who are you helping?
  2. How do I, or how can I, help you?

Own It

I woke up feeling terrible this morning.

My stomach hurt, I was weak and mucousy, tired and hungry.

It was not surprising, and it was all my fault.

After a few weeks of dedicated and consistent keto and intermittent fasting,

I went off the rails with bad decisions yesterday-

including a burger with the bun and fries for brunch, a few adult beverages throughout the day and mac and cheese with my steak at dinner.

So, it was no surprise that, instead of the good feeling and energy that I’ve had on my diet plan,

my off-plan behavior created the feelings I woke up with today.

I am simply experiencing the repercussions of my bad decisions.

Cause and effect isn’t always so obvious, nor so immediate; but it is always there.

One of the most important things that we can do to improve the quality of our lives is to accept the fact that it’s all our fault.

That is, the results that we experience are most often directly associated to our thoughts, decisions and behaviors.

And that, while other people can positively or negatively affect our circumstances, we and only we are ultimatly responsible for the effect.

It’s a hard pill for many to swallow; ironically especially for those that most need to take it.

When we are mired in negative patterns, beliefs, thought and emotions it’s easier to blame circumstances, other people’s behavior and even luck or God when things don’t go our way.

It’s also debilitating.

We can do nothing about that which we do not control.

Fortunately, the reverse is also true.

When we choose to accept responsibility for everything, then we can create the life we want.

Don’t get me wrong, I for one do also count on others and on the blessing of God, for everything that I do….

But when things do not go my way, I own it.

My attitude is always to look at what I could have done differently or better, to reflect upon lessons learned, take remedial actions and design systems and habits to ensure i don’t produce the same negative result again.

   I have been good at the accepting responsibility part for several years by the way;

but the realization that i can affect it all through systems and that this is the way I can modify my behavior to create habits that produce the outcomes I want is a lesson I have only really learned over the last couple of years.

It has made an amazing difference in my life and my business

and I hope it will in yours too.

Producing Leaders

I love this quote from my friend John Maxwell.

We are studying his 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership in our Blackbelt Leadership program right now by the way.

We are starting with the first law next week and will continue through one a week for the next 21 weeks, in addition of course to all of the great leadership training that happens innately through our classes.

After all, we are a leadership development academy that also happens to teach the most practical self-defense in the world.

Back to the quote.

It is such a true and important principle.

You see, gathering followers, and then leaving them that way, helps no one.

The leadership in question, nor the organization nor the community is served well.

The follower least of all is served; for he or she will never know the empowerment of real leadership!

But in a leadership organization, the leader produces leaders who create leaders who create leaders……

The culture, accomplishment and impact of such a leadership organization is awesome!

I am proud that Krav Maga Martial Arts is such an organization and that we continue to grow better.

You can also create the same where you lead.

If you are in my program, ask me how.

I’d love to help you!

And if you’re not yet, let’s meet soon!

You can also email me if it’s better for you.

I’m Proud and Grateful for These Blackbelt Leaders

As you know if you know me, I love leadership.

And as you should also already know, what I love most is producing great leaders.

As the great John Maxwell said, “The function of leadership isn’t to gather more followers. It’s to produce more leaders.”

With that caveat, the purpose of this email is to do 3 things:

  1. to celebrate and express my gratitude for Blackbelt Leader Sarah Church;
  2. to celebrate and express my gratitude for Senior Blackbelt Thomas Pioli;
  3. to share some good news, and also a challenge.

  1. I am so proud of and grateful for Sensei Sarah Church. She’s been growing with Krav Maga Martial Arts since she was 14 years old. She started in our daytime homeschool program and grew with us through many ups and downs and training evolutions over the next 8 years. In that time Sensei Sarah was willing to get out of her comfort zone and accept leadership challenges I threw at her, always eager to learn and grow and always ready to contribute. Over the last couple of years, she has been one of the primary head instructors sowing into students and especially our younger ones. Sensei Sarah is loved for her fun and enthusiastic attitude, her warm and welcoming countenance and her ability to make kids feel good about themselves. I am so super proud of and grateful for her!
  2. I am so proud of and grateful for Sensei Thomas Pioli. Thomas has been training with KMMA since 2009. When he started training, he was still also serving in the US Navy as a Search and Rescue Diver. Sensei Thomas earned his KMMA Blackbelt in ’12, his 2nd degree in ’16 and his third degree blackbelt in September of 2019. He served as the Chief Instructor of our school from 2013-2020. Sensei Thomas took a hiatus for a few years while working for a season in executive security. But he missed the training, positivity and community of KMMA; as well as being mentored and mentoring others to be their best- to the place that we call Blackbelt Leadership Excellence. Sensei Thomas is a friend, a great Blackbelt and an important part of our history and development; he was even one of the main forces that helped me raise Sensei Sarah into the great leader that she is today.
  3. So the good news is that Sensei Thomas is back to take over where Sensei Sarah leaves off. She has decided to move on to her next training evolution in life, with a new career and moving out on her own and other exciting life evolutions. The great news is she isn’t going away, but is still an important part of our leadership community. Sensei Sarah will still be around training and helping with events and such; In fact, she is testing for her 3rd degree in September! I’m proud and grateful that , even while stepping down as head instructor, she will continue to grow and remain an important Blakcbelt Leader in our community.
  4. And, as I have already alluded to, I have hired the great Sensei Thomas Pioli as our full time Chief Instructor! You are going to LOVE his leadership and teaching style. Sensei Thomas is awesome at combining realistic training with fun, function and purpose to raise up Blackbelt Leaders who are fit, confident and competent at self defense and at life. He is a great leader and I know he will be fundamental to helping me grow our students, staff and organization to even higher levels than we ever have before!

Both Sensei Thomas and Sensei Sarah are conducting the stripe testing this week and it’s rocking! Be sure to congratulate them both, thank her for her service and welcome him to the team!

Oh, and I almost forgot the challenge!

I challenge YOU to become one of our next future Blackbelt Leaders and Sensei!

Wherever you are in the law of the process, all you have to do is decide and then start training that way!

Producing great Blackbelt Leaders is what we do!

Deciding to be one is up to you!
