What’s your favorite food?

This is a picture of my wife making me rabo (oxtail) for Father’s Day.

She does an amazing job and it’s delicious and, except for the pounds I put on that I need to focus on losing this week, I am grateful. 🙂

This is a picture of my son’s and I yesterday.

It truly was a great day.

I am so proud of my sons and their accomplishments thus far, and even more excited for them about the future.

I get to take a little credit as their dad, but mostly I am grateful to God and to the fact that they group up in the dojo (martial arts academy).

That experience will serve them well for the rest of their lives.

Which brings me back to rabo.

As I said, my wife does an amazing job and it’s delicious.

But that’s true of a lot of the meals that she makes me.

Why is rabo my favorite?

I believe it’s for the memories it conjures up- or at least the emotions.

I am not seven sure exactly what memories these are, but I know that deep in my subconscious there is some programming from youth that makes me feel good when I eat rabo.

So what do oxtail, my sons and my martial arts academy have in common or to do with this email?

That’s what it’s like growing up in a great martial arts academy; especially a leadership development academy that also happens to teach the most practical self defense in the world.

Men and ladies who have grown up in our environment are more likely to behave in a certain way.

They may not even remember why- like with your favorite food.

But they will act with courtesy, integrity, perseverance, self control and indomitable spirit.

They will demonstrate more focus, respect, discipline, confidence, gratitude and vision than their peers.

They will be more equipped to deal with the inevitable challenges of life, better prepared for the opportunities and able to defend themselves should the need arise.

They will also have fond memories of the leadership and community, the friends and the mentors that shared this journey with them along their way.

I can’t tell you what their favorite food will be but, for a child that grows up in our Blackbelt Leadership program, I can promise all of that.

Are you green and growing or ripe and rotting?

We are either green and growing, or ripe and rotting.

Too many people think of education as a means to an end, rather than realizing that growth is one of the most essential elements of life.

When we are learning and growing, we are not only better prepared for the challenges and opportunitites of life, but we are motivated, dedicated, excited and alive!

I have been a Blackbelt for about 35 years, a student of leadership for almost as long, and have run my professional martial arts school for near 21.

I have been a consumate student and teacher of leadership for many years.

But when the pandemic hit last year, I doubled down like never before. Something inside me innately knew that the challenges of that chapter were an opportunity to get bitter or to get better and, of course, our KMMA Leadership Principle that “Everything Happens For A Reason And It Serves Me Well.”

I read, thought, led, sought, learned and grew more than I had in a decade.

That period yielded me not only new leadership growth and knowledge, but new mentors, the virtual dojo and our google classroom, I wrote a book and we created the new and improved Blackbelt Leadership Training Course, which is the best and highest manifestation of the vision and mission I had for our dojo years before than we’ve ever offered.

We continue to grow and have begun to reap what we sow.

I am grateful-

and also still hungry, green and growing!

I am also grateful for and excited that we get to help so many other great students do the same!

Youth, teens, adults and whole families are green and growing together at KMMA!

This morning, ask yourself that honest question.

Are you green and growing or ripe and rotting?

If the latter, you can change that any time you choose.

The great thing about learning and growth is that it’s not too late to start again!

What’s in a title?

A student recently asked what he should call me and it got me thinking about the topic for today’s message.

I am a father, husband and grandfather, as well as a Christian, Author, MBA, Veteran……

I am also called Sensei, Shihan and Grand Master. These are of course the ones the student was asking about and I told him that I’d answer to all of them and all were true. I was first a Sensei and then a Shihan and now a Grand Master in the Martial Arts. The way I see it, I don’t stop being the one just because I’ve now earned the other title too.

And what really is a title?

Upon meditation I believe the titles that we wear are symbols for who we are and how we should be.

My titles reflect:

  1. Who I am in relation to others around me: I am the father of my children, a teacher to my students and the Grand Master of my dojo academy.
  2. Recognition of work and accomplishment, i.e. Author of books, Master of Business Administration, Sensei (which is in my dojo a certified instructor) etc
  3. The most important- our titles reflect who and how we should be.

As a father I need to be committed, give both love and discipline and raise up a child in the way he should go.

As a husband I need to love my wife.

As the Grand Master of KMMA, I am charged with not only the training, growth and development of all of my students but the care and professional development of my team.

And I am also, as all of my Sensei, held to a higher standard of conduct and behavior than I would expect of others.

One of the titles I am most proud of is that of the Blackbelt Leader- not only because I am one but, more importantly, because my most important role and goal is to create, develop and grow other Blackbelt Leaders.

Our Blackbelt Leaders are second degree Blackbelts or above.

On the journey to earning that title they learned to be leaders and teachers.

They developed FOCUS, RESPECT, DISCIPLINE, CONFIDENCE, GRATITUDE, and VISION, as well as the physical attributes of Speed, Focus, Power, Accuracy and Intensity.

They are prepared to live and empowered to lead!

Some will head off to college, others to military, business or ministry leadership callings…

Of course some already had great careers when they began our Blackbelt Leadership Development Program, and have just honed and improved themselves and their leadership skills.

But in each and every case I know that they are prepared for success in every challenge, at every opportunity and for every calling.

I am proud of and grateful for each and all of them and for my calling to prepare them to live and empower them to lead.

Call me Sensei (Teacher), Shihan (Master) or Grand Master.

The title is just the title- but what I’m called to do with it is who I am.

By the way, reading is a GREAT way to improve Focus as well as learn new things. That’s why it’s one of the Blackbelt Leader behaviors we reward at KMMA. Check out our Book Club card here.

You can have your child read the below excerpt with you for credit towards a Blackbelt Character stripe today!

1.2 What is Focus?

Focus is the ability to block out distractions and concentrate on what’s important.

We teach this foundational truth to students from the very beginning of their journey at Krav Maga Martial Arts. Some kids come relatively focused for their age, and many need lots of work- some adults too.

Truth is, everybody can use better focus. Focus is our first foundation superpower.

One, because true focus is rare and those that have it accomplish amazing feats;

Two, because Focus is the power that makes all of the other Blackbelt Leadership Traits more powerful.

There are 4 main types of Focus we teach at Krav Maga Martial Arts:

  1. Focus of the eyes.

  1. Focus of the ears.

  1. Focus of the mind.

  1. Focus of the body.

The first two are especially useful for students’ paying attention skills and for interpersonal communication.  When a child in school, or a college or adult student for that matter, looks and listens better, they hear and understand more too.  This equals improved concentration, comprehension and better grades.

At least as importantly, looking another in the eyes when we speak, and truly listening to understand, are communication skills that we all can improve to great benefit.

Of course the focus of the body- the ability to control our bodies and our behavior- is also important, and we teach these skills through our listening positions, and of course the martial skills themselves.  Students that begin with very little physical dexterity, or the ability to sit still without fidgeting, develop a Blackbelt level of physical control in a relatively short time, and this skill spills over into everything else in their lives.

Focus of the mind is especially important for those of us looking to exponentially improve in any area of life though.  In a chaotic world, rife with distraction, the ability to truly block out distraction and concentrate on what’s important is indeed a superpower;  it’s often not the big things but the small distractions that keep us from our goals and  mired in mediocrity.

Like any skill that wields this much power, Focus takes work. And, while we begin every white belt (KMMA beginner) on development of Focus in our Foundations program, it truly is a journey which grows to Blackbelt Leadership Excellence over a few years, on the way to Blackbelt and beyond.

By the time our Blackbelts test for that honor,  they demonstrate superhero-like physical skills, tenacity and courage, and the Focus to succeed not just in the martial arts but in all of their academic, career and leadership goals for life.

My training started with Grand Master Del Castillo in 2001, when I was only 4 years old. As a kid, it wasn’t really my decision to get started but I definitely enjoyed it and grateful my dad kept me in it. Without the Superpowers, I don’t know where I would be in life right now. It’s incredible to see how Grand Master Del Castillo has been able to take the lessons we teach in our Blackbelt Leadership Course and put it into a book. Not only have these superpowers set the foundation for my success in life, but he has also been able to create a community where I feel like I have a second family. As an instructor at KMMA, I am honored to be able to have grown up with these lessons and I am more honored to be able to sow into the next generation the same way Grand Master Del Castillo was able to do for me.

     Sensei Kyle Bierly

KMMA Chief Instructor, Student and Superhero (that’s me featured on the Focus meme at the top of this email)

“A must read book for learning the life lessons for developing leadership skills on your journey to Blackbelt and beyond!  To be a Blackbelt one must train like a Blackbelt and this book shows

you the steps to accomplish that goal.  Thank you Master Stephen Del Castillo for paving the way for your students on their journey to Blackbelt and beyond!”

GM Jeff Smith, 10th Degree Blackbelt, seven-time PKA World Light Heavyweight Karate Champion
