The 12 Days of Christmas, Day 1

For the next 12 days, I want to do something fun in the  spirit of giving.

Every day, starting today and finishing on Christmas day, I am going to send you a special email that will include 3 parts:

  1. a personal writing from me on a leadership principle, martial arts or Holiday Meditation on Mastery that I think you will enjoy, culminating with a special written gift on Christmas day.
  2. I will give you an actual gift, from my own intellectual property or KMMA archives, that may be useful to you immediately or that you can use for a future event or training.
  3. I will also give you an offer to give a gift to someone else you care about in return.

Today’s blog is about the passage of time.

It truly does go faster than we expect.

What we do with it determines rather we’ll be filled with gratitude or regret.

I hope you’ll read it and give me feedback.

But read on for my gift to you today and the chance to bless someone else with a great KMMA gift from you!

Like The Sands of The Hour Glass….

If you or someone you know or remember watched it, you finished that sentence. Quite amazingly the TV soap opera Days Of Our Lives has been running almost every day since November of 1965 and is still running!

      Crazy right?

Time flies. The days become weeks become months and become years before we know it.

The older we get, the more we recognize this.

Sitting in church yesterday, I was watching some young children perform in a Christmas Concert.

I remember feeling a sense of melancholy.

Upon reflection I realized the feeling comes from the fact that I will never have those times with my kids again. They are all as good as grown and developing into their own adult lives.

While I was feeling joy and happiness, I was also recognizing the power of the moment and the pride that the parents of the kids on stage must feel- and wondering of they were feeling it.

I sometimes talk to my wife about how much better I am with my grandson than I may have been with my sons.

I know, as many probably do, that much of this is simply the change of paradigm and priority we have as we get older.

We come to realize what’s most important.

In youth we tend to be distracted by so many other things and, if we’re not careful, can miss the moments.

Once they’re gone, we can not get them back. But here’s what we can do:

  1. Wherever we are in the passage of life, be there completly. If you have young kids, be there with them, in mind and focus as well as body, as much as you can and savor every moment; it really does fly by quickly.

  2. But if you’re kids are older now, like mine are, we can’t waste a moment wondering how we did- because there is still work to do! These moments will fly by too. Love your kids (and others) where they’re at and do your best to be there for them.

  3. The same is true of the moments that make up the days that turn into years. The years don’t actually fly- they pass one day, one hour, one moment at a time. So wherever you are, be there. At work, focus on work, at home on home and at play on play. Focus on giving 100% to the mission of the moment to win the day. This is the way.

  4. There is no time for regret. The problem with it is that it steals the day. So regardless of the mistakes or misfortunes of the past, begin today. You’ll be happy you did tomorrow.
