4 Winning Hacks to Win at Whatever

Today for Winning Wednesday, I would like to address 3 of the greatest leadership principles that I think are essential to win.

  1. Vision
    • Where there is no Vision, the people perish. (Proverbs 29:18)
      • We usually think of this scripture as though it applies to Leadership- and it does. But it is also essential that each and all of us has a Vision for our own life. If we aim at nothing, we will hit it every time.
  2. Gratitude
    • Whereas Vision is the vehicle that leads individuals, families, organizations and societies towards the progressive realization of worthy goals; Gratitude is the fuel for the journey. Trying to drive Vision without being grateful for all the blessings we already have, and expressing gratitude towards those that accompany us upon our journey, is like trying to drive a car or fly a plane with no gas.
  3. Focus
    • Focus is the ability to block out distractions and concentrate on what’s important. There will be no shortage of distractions on our way to where we want to go. Focus is the Blackbelt Superpower that allows us to stay true north.
  4. WIN
    • WIN is one of our acronymns for the Blackbelt Leadership lesson about “What’s Important Next”. It is a high level manifestation of Focus. You see, most people get bogged down with overwhelm when they look at all they need to do- in a job, a day, a journey, a life. This secret to success teaches us to focus one one thing, the next thing; what’s important next.

I hope this short lesson has been useful to you today.

These are important lessons I remind myself regularly on my quest to be my best, and also teach to my Team, family and Blackbelt Leadership students at KMMA.

The first 3 are 3 of the 6 foundational superpowers I teach about in my book, Developing Your Superpowers by the way. You can click the link to order your copy on Amazon or, if you’re a student, of course you have one because, like all else you need to succeed at KMMA, it’s included in the program!

If you’re not a student yet but would like to give our special tribe a try, click here to begin.

If you are a student, I would like to express my sincere Gratitude for you.

You are the ones that allow my Team and I to do what we do.

We are grateful for you.

I especially want to shout out to my Blackbelts and all my Blackbelt Leadership students.

The prior are the ones who walk the talk. You said you would do it, and you did- and you keep on doing so today!

I’m super proud of the large Blackbelt class we have every Tuesday and Thursday night! You all honor me with your excellence and I am grateful!

And my Blackbelt Leadership students are the ones on that same quest. You saw the Vision and set the goal and are applying the Blackbelt Leadership principles and process to take you where you want to go!

I’m proud and grateful for you!

Teach them to fall

As you probably know, we are a leadership development academy and I am a consummate student and teacher of leadership.

So, when we went away to “sharpen the sword”, the term I give to personal and professional development in a warrior’s nod to Stephen Covey’s 7th habit of “sharpening the saw”, we were adhering to this important principle but also following the leadership principle of leading from the front- leading by example.

It was an amazing weekend in Annapolis and did not disappoint. We learned great leadership lessons from current and former military leaders, martial arts and industry leaders, visited the US Naval Academy and more.

We had fun, learned and recharged and I can’t wait to get back and share with those that I have the honor of leading!

Today, I want to share with you one specific jewel of wisdom shared personally with me from a decorated military warrior, leader and hero, CPT Hong Cao of the US Navy Special Operations Command.

CPT Cao has an incredibly impressive resume. He has served and led in many deployments around the world including Iraq and Afghanistan. He is a US Naval Academy graduate and has served as the Commandant of the infamous US Naval Dive School.

To be succinct, CPT Cao has been there and done that.

He taught us about leadership, team building and shared valuable nuggets of wisdom from his 25 year military career.

CPT Cao was also a student of my mentor Grand Master Jeff Smith whom many of you have met.

It was gratifying to see him honor his teacher telling stories of his growing up at Grand master Smith’s academy under his tutelage.

As a teacher of future leaders myself, it was edifying to see this great man credit so many leadership and other lessons he had gained through the martial arts for much of his success at the Naval Academy, Special Operations training and in his illustrious leadership career.

At the end of his presentation, though, I asked CPT Cao this question:

“Sir, what do you see as one of the greatest weaknesses or challenges in our society that we can help address as leadership educators”.

With the resolute confidence afforded only to those that really know, CPT Cao offered without hesitation, “teach them to fail”.

As you can imagine, it took me a minute more of listening to really understand what CPT Cao was sharing.

He went on to explain that the most important attribute of all, of all the great qualities we imbue into our Blackbelt Leaders through training in the martial arts is toughness- that fire in the belly that will never quit.

CPT Cao went on to explain, in the voice of wisdom that comes from those that know that they know because they’ve walked the walk, that failure is inevitable in any great endeavor, and that only the resilience, perseverance and fortitude that informs what we do after we fail determines our level of success in the real world.

Wow, mind blown and marching order accepted!

But then, CPT Cao used that powerful tool of teaching that turns theory into something far more useful;

He gave two real world success stories of personal failure.

CPT Cao shared about the time that he failed his first 2nd degree Blackbelt test under Grandmaster Smith, how he felt, what he did and what that experience did for him.

And he shared about the time that he flunked out of the US Naval Academy.

This amazing successful US Naval Academy graduate who had now had an amazing career as a great military leader was sharing with us that he had failed to make the grade his first time through.

He also shared that they don’t really give second chances.

CPT Cao told the story of all that he had to do to change that, a story of grit and stick-to-it-iveness that ends with the US Naval Academy telling him, “you’re the one”- you’ve got another chance.

CPT Cao demonstrated the humility element that he shared as one his four pillars of leadership by sharing with us these and even a few other lesser failures.

And he charged us with this important mission. He told us that we have to prepare our kids to fail. That we have to make them understand that, in the real world, things do not come easy.

We have to give them the toughness and teach them the skills to never quit, and to commit that we will do whatever it takes to accomplish the goal that we want.

He said that this is what is missing in society today and that only leadership institutions like ours can change it, giving our students the real secret to success.

Challenge accepted sir.

KMMA adult karate

Team Tuesday: The Rise of Sensei Sarah

Today’s Team Tuesday is about our beloved Head Instructor, Sensei Sarah.

Every student loves Sensei Sarah.

She’s confident and competent, sweet and compassionate, and fun to be around.

Sensei Sarah, like all success stories has, well, a story.

She wasn’t always the happy, confident Blackbelt Leader you see before you today.

Sarah started with KMMA in September of 2013. She was 13.

In Sensei Sarah’s own words:

“At age 13 my self esteem was at an all time low but over the years as I took classes, tested for ranks, and got stronger, I could see the result of the hard work both physically and mentally. As a little kid I had always wanted to be a ninja and I was finally fulfilling that dream.”

Sensei Sarah began teaching with Team KMMA as a Certified Blackbelt in 2018, the same year she graduated High School as the Valedictorian of her class!

She continues to excel in her personal training in the Blackbelt classes and on her Path To Mastery!

She earned her 2nd Degree Blackbelt Leader in September 2020 and will be testing for her 3rd Degree, Senior Blackbelt, in September 2022, a year early for all the extra hours she puts in both training and teaching!

Sensei Sarah loves teaching! In fact, when she’s not helping us train up the next generation of Blackbelt Leaders at KMMA, she teaches guitar, piano, ukulele, creative writing, storytelling and PE for elementary kids!

Sensei Sarah is also an award winning poet and working on publishing her first book.

I am super proud of and grateful for Sensei Sarah on Team KMMA.

I’m proud of how far she’s come and excited for her as she continues to grow.

She is an inspiration for all, but especially all the little girls who look up to her knowing that they too can be a great Blackbelt Leader like her one day!

Sensei Sarah, the once awkward teen with low self esteem has transformed into a superhero.

” Both my mental health and physical health have been greatly affected by my time here. My body is stronger; I can defend myself if need be, I run races and enjoy other methods of physical conditioning.

My mind is stronger and this gives me the strength to do the things I felt incapable of doing before.”

She’s Prepared To Live and Empowered To Lead!

Way to lead Sensei!

Proud of you!

Fantastic Friday Training – Building a Great Team

Yesterday somebody commented on one of my facebook posts and said “you got a great team sir”.

I thanked them.

And upon reflecting on my sentiment about the comment, I realized I was not just grateful- but proud.

I was first cautious of that, but then realized that it was not the bad kind of pride that comes before the fall, but just another kind of gratitude- that feeling that comes from accomplishment when your hard work pays off.

You see, I do have a great team.

And yet, this great team is composed largely of more relative new additions than many of my other great teams that have come before.

There are three lessons for my fellow leaders:

  1. Having a great team is not an accident but conversely hard work and our most important job.
  2. It’s an all the time job. I have come to the realization that, of all the important work that I do, the hiring, training and development of dream team is my first and foremost responsibility and,
  3. Not a job to be done “when I need to” but rather one I always need to focus on.

And I strongly suspect that this is true for most organizations that strive to be great.

I’m not going to write more on the subject but close with two comments and two questions:

  1. KMMA is a leadership development academy that also happens to teach the most practical self defense in the world. Therefore, every KMMA student is at once a member of a great team, the benefactor of the excelence of my dream team and learning to be a great leader too!
  2. Like all things leadership, team building is a science and an art and can be learned. Just as with our martial arts, practice under the right mentors can prepare you for excellence in this skill too.

The questions are:

a. Would you like to be a member of the KMMA Dream Team one day?

b. Do you own a business or lead an organization such that you would appreciate some furhter focused training on team building skills?

I look forward to hearing from you.
