now on to today’s message:

PARRI: The R Stage, Review and Renew

PARRI is a tool we use to practically apply the Blackbelt Leadership Principle of Constant and Never Ending Improvement (CANI).

PARRI stands for:

  • PLAN

  • ACT

  • REVIEW

  • RENEW

  • IMPROVE

Today I want to spotlight the review and renew stage.

When we review our progress, or lack thereof, towards our Big Hairy Audacious and Noble Goals, it is important that we honestly assess what we have done well at, and where there is room for improvement.

Only with this data can we make a plan for meaningful progress.

     The review process is simple.

  1. List your victories.

    • We always begin with victories because we’re wired to focus on the negative. Since we know that we move in the direction of our dominant thoughts and that energy flows where focus goes, we don’t want to focus on what went wrong first. First celebrate the victories.

  2. List your opportunities.

    • “Opportunities” are the areas that didn’t go according to plan, need fixing, or at least leave room for improvement. Leaders don’t cringe at these, but rather embrace them as we are always seeking to improve and we have found an opportunity to do so!

  3. Create your plan to renew and/or improve.

    • This of course is where the lion’s share of the brain work happens. We now must create the plans to fix whatever’s broken, renew a plan where needed (i.e. the goal still needs to happen but maybe needs a little tweaking to get there and/or is working and we just need to keep doing it) and/or develop plans to improve in areas that are good but can be even better.

  4. You will have noticed of course that we are back to P. PARRI, like CANI, is a perpetual process.

The Review Process In Action: 2020 In Review for Krav Maga Martial Arts

     Victories:

  • We celebrated our 20 year anniversary and all these years later continue to execute our Vision & Mission better than ever before!

  • Our Blackbelt Leader & Instructor Training programs are better than ever with a world class Dream Team!

  • The 2020 evolution of the Blackbelt Leadership Training Program is a HUGE success and will create the most amazing leaders yet!

  • We evolved to a Family Training model where whole families take their Blackbelt Leadership journey together!

  • We broke our classes down to four training levels so that every student gets more of exactly what they need.

  • We produced several new Blackbelts, Junior Blackbelts, Senior and Master Blackbelts this year!

  • We survived and thrived during the Coronavirus pandemic, practicing what we teach and reacting well. As everything happens for a reason and serves us well, we have the new Live Virtual and on-demand training platforms in place and here to stay as a result of it. Thus, students have a great way to train when far away, when they can’t make it to class at the dojo, or just want some extra training.

  • Oh, and Blackbelt Goal Setting Season was a HUGE success! I have been SOOOO amazed and impressed with the quality of everyone’s work and vision! You inspire me! That’s why we decided to keep the boards up through the New Year. We will take them down and let you start taking them home throughout January.

    • lots of you have belts and certs here still too! we’ll get those out week one when we get back Jan 4 too.

  • 75 students made the commitment to the goal and plan of training to Blackbelt & Beyond!

     Opportunities:

  • Our day classes were not to the same standard of excellence as our evening. The smaller numbers make it difficult to always pair suitable training partners and, even more challenging, the multiple ranks training together make it difficult for instructors to ensure every student is getting exactly what they need.

  • Our uniform standard continued to slide to where it has been almost non existent and students basically just train in whatever they want. This deficiency detracts from unity and cohesion, discipline and pride. Of course it also occasionally can raise the question of suitable attire in the dojo.

  • While the separation of the Basic Foundations program from the Blackbelt Training Course (BTC) and Blackbelt Leadership Training Course (LTC) has been great, and the addition of more training floor too, the classes happening at the same time have not been. They often distract from one another and resources are not neccessarily optimized.

  • Communication still and always can be even better. It seems someone is always still left out of the loop.

     The Plan:

  • The 2021 Class Schedule eliminates day classes and also deconflicts evenings. Sensei Kyle Bierly Chief Instructor will have all of our great Sensei available to empower lives through martial arts and create more Blackbelt Leaders in 2021!

  • We will enforce a uniform standard. You will receive your official uniform for free when you come in for your free gift from me!

  • While I will create a detailed communications plan, and also a checklist to make sure that we are communicating effectively in ’21, here is the basic framework of how we get the word out and will do it better:

    • In class announcements

    • Take home handouts

    • Email- where I send my daily educational and inspirational blogs in addition to important information on classes, events, schedule etc.

    • Facebook Official Page (for general info and student communication) and Virtual Dojo (for training stuff in conjunction with Google classroom)

    • To a lesser degree, snail mail, text and telephone

Thanks for reading and see you Jan 4!
